    V-max fishing

Went for a walk in North Waikato in a farm with a geese problem. It has a decent pond where they hang out before raiding the crops. The Tikka 22-250 with 50gr V-max’s came for the ride. After driving in I had a little walk to keep in cover. I sneaked in on my hands and knees and luckily I had the MTN bipod up front which makes things a bit easier. Most geese were on the water but one was standing on a small island face on maybe 100m away and I lined up and boom - puff and the place erupted. One more lingered enough to get thwacked and the rest were off to the neighbours for the evening. I waded in to get the closest goose to see if I could grab the back legs for a feed but to be honest the v-max had done a demo job at 3500 odd fps. I left it for the hawks to clean up.

That’s when I decided to walk the pond which fills from when the river floods. For once it was quite clear and I soon spotted a decent Koi carp cruising around the shallows like a trout. When it was right at the surface I sent it a depth charge and after the splash and mud cleared it was flat on the bottom. So boots off again and I grabbed it for a look and left another present for the Hawks. I managed another 2 before deciding to save my handloads for better use.

I’d rather be hunting deer but at least the Tikka got a walk….

I used to shoot a farm at Rangiriri that hosted the bow fishing champs, and shot hundreds of carp with a 22.250, 280, 12g, .22lr........ seriously considered a sks for the semi and cheap ammo that would have penetrated the water better than a 55g vmax at warp factor.

Yeah not much internet info on the best Carp bullet ! Pretty sure the v-max is not the best but makes a good splash.

I have been nailing a few with the 22 and subsonics - you do need to be patient and head shoot them at the surface. Even a little underwater and no good

Went out with the 22 and subtonics last evening and got the 12 point stag of pond shooting…..

Saw some different shaped fins in deeper water and waited patiently. Eventually a silver shape came close enough and near the surface and I slotted a subsonic into its head. As I suspected a decent Mullet and something I can actually eat for once. I whipped off the boots and waded out to get the prize. No exit wound so must have just tapped it just enough for a kill
