    Wairarapa Roar 2021

This is a short 2 minute slideshow of a trip into the Wairarapa.
This is my first time into this stunning piece of New Zealand other than a Rugby game at 16yrs old.
I have put together a video as well for those that are interested, it is 25 minutes long though
The property is a sheep and beef station. It has no deer fencing and all deer are wild.

I was wondering why you'd leave the SI to hunt in the NI, now I see why. Well done

    Very good photos thanks.

Those large coastal Wairarapa sheep and beef stations have allowed the wild herds to build up to such a size that they are now becoming a problem. The deer I saw on Te Awawiti station were as numerous as rabbits, and the poor Angus were showing 3-4 ribs at the beginning of Winter Not flash. They need to make their mind up about whether they want to run a deer farm or a beef farm. The way it was operating when I visited, the beefies were not getting a fair go.

Of course they make good money out of American hunters.....who will not be coming for several years, all the while the herds go gangbusters.

Lots of that country couldn't grow a decent Angus even if there were no deer.

Lol The uncle of a mate owns the property. It’s more than just a hunting trip for them. I was extremely grateful to be invited.

I’ve no idea about American hunters or where they go. This place is certainly no trophy farm.
Animals were plentiful but this farmers stock were in top condition.

It’s a very interesting situation in the Wairarapa, similar to other parts of this country. Some farmers via either a lack of understanding of the law around health and safety, because of past problems with hunters, a false belief that every farmer can make money from wild deer or another reason have let the deer numbers get to an unsustainable number.
The smarter farmers have let people shoot them and managed that process well. I’ve hunted on the properties that are managed well and looked across the boundary at mobs that would astound some people, especially people of value the natural environment, that’s all of us aye?

I’m sorry I’ve used this opportunity to again push this agenda, that was a great video, and like to commented on YouTube; it always amazes me how far a stag will run after shot. What caliber?

The station owner is in the process of building a trap to control the numbers so he’s well aware of the potential for overstocking. There is just so much cover with all the native and pine blocks. I noticed a neighbouring property had virtually no cover and probably held very few deer but the landscape was extremely barren.
    The rifle is a Blaser R93 in 6.5x284 shooting 143gr eld-x
That shot you mentioned was to be fair a touch high and a touch back. The angle from the rifle was much better than that of the camera but my mate did stop the stag at an angle that didn’t help with a perfect shot lol

Yep... Easy to say all this. We had poachers on our place last week, doesn't inspire confidence. All things have balance don't they.

Nice hunting bud. There is some wild country in the Wairarapa alright. It is far bigger and has more animals than people realise.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
