    A week off

Finally finished the seasons planting contracts in the first week of the school holidays. Better late then never I guess.

Decided to take the second week off and do some missions with the boys.

First up was the Nelson Lakes, we have had some great times up there over the last few years and this was to be no different....

Typical spring weather. Snow up top, strong winds, dark storms rolling down the valleys interspersed with radiant sunshine.

Day 1 involved a bit of walking which was largely uneventful except for spotting a nanny goat at about 30m which i pulled the trigger on only to hear a 'click'. Much cursing ensued when i realized I hadn't managed to chamber a round !!! Idiot

The one goat turned into two as a billy emerged from an overhanging bank and shunted her into the bush. Pissed me off that did always good to get them when in a NP

The first encounter on Day 2 wasn't much better when we spooked 2 deer in the bush but the lad was pretty excited to see them non the less.

If this had one positive, it slowed us right down and made us much more careful. A while later i spotted a horizontal line thru some scrub that looked suspiciously like the top two inches of a deers back. Eventually up popped a neck and head Boom. Deer down!!

A bit of butchery, a retreat to the lake and a tasty dinner followed for two satisfied fellas.

Day 3 Started with plucking a few possums in the dark, always a bit of fun.

Then we had a good attempt at the alpine version of 'surf and turf' but the trout just wouldn't play ball !!

Eventually gave up and made a run for home.

After a desperately needed clean up, wash and laundry session at home it was off to the coast for the rest of the week.

White bait were easy to find, especially at first light at the river mouth.

But once again the fishing let us down. Far too difficult this fishing malarky I'm bloody giving up !!

A great time was had by both the young and not so young !!

It truly is an amazing country this of ours even when you do keep it local.

Really made me think I need to take more time off and enjoy it more. Awesome to see the boys thriving on the outdoor lifestyle too.

Yep ill be looking out for it mate

Hope you have a primo trip, its great to get out there with the young fellas. One day I'm sure they will look back fondly on those times.

Just as I do (and im sure you do too) when reflecting on missions with my parents as a young lad

I remember walking back to durvil hut from Morgan's ( the old one) with Dad and his mate and His Son...us boys were running ahead slashing at anything hanging over the track with our knives and I managed to stab myself in the thigh good and proper! It was a squirter.

    Still got the scar.
