    2hp outboard on a 8ft dinghy?

Just looking at getting a outboard for my little 8ft dinghy I am thinking 2hp. Has any one on here used one before? What would it go like? Not expecting power but want to be able to go up and down the river or would a 10hp be better?

    Cheers

How heavy your dingy is fully laden?

I had a 2hp seagull on my 8ft wooden dingy which was quite heavy.

Pushed it along ok in the estuary but you won't be breaking any speed records.

A 5hp or 10hp would probably be better for river work if there's a bit of a current flowing.

    Cheers
    Pete

my 2 cents worth .2 hp is pretty slow and probably no reverse . Ive had two 4hp motors they still have fuel tank incorporated on top , will push a 8 ft dingy fine, may even get on the plane .

I used my mercury 2hp on a 13 ft fibreglass sailing hull, went fine. Used so little gas I thought I was being visited by the petrol fairy

used a 2 for a while on a ten footer, two blokes and a wet net made for slow going against a current but still better than rowing or swimming.
a 6 would plane me and two small kids just at full throttle and could not be backed off or it would fall off the plane an 8 planes me and the kids and a net or two generously proportioned blokes just.

a 4 or 5 may plane just you if your lucky?

I may be a generously proportioned bloke but .....................................

and 10hp would definitely be better

Too heavy, 9.9 is the same engine as a 15 which may as well be twice the weight.

I like the water on the outside of the boat, there is literally 5 inches of freeboard at the transom with the 8hp.

Just brought a 6hp for my 2.4m(8ft) Smartwave dingy. Haven't tried it out yet, maybe this evening if the weather plays ball.

My boss has the 2.4 SW with a 5h merc two smoke and by himself depending on loading can plane or not so you should be good with the 6, tho I would have gone 8 as in most brands they are the same engine just detuned.

run well, scored it off a mate who wanted to have a look at the state of the head gasket and snapped 5 of the bolts in the process. I've since removed the snapped bolts, replaced the head gasket and have it running quite well. Never bought a boat for it to go on, so have had it sitting for a year or so. Run it up every now and then to make sure it still works and pumps water.
