4x4 Paint job options

So my much loved 4x4 is getting some rust work done and will need a paint job.

I am very much considering something along the lines of the raptor styled paints, possibly a little thinned down, still making up my mind. Extremely hard wearing and whilst it’s going to be a little more expensive to do???? Im just curious as to what others have used or had done.

No my truck isnt 100% off road by any stretch of the imagination but some recent engine and gearbox work has given me a little more faith in the old girl to go on on some overdue adventures, one of the areas on the coast i do go to is a well overgrown area that new flash paint with get well pin stripped so id rather have a paint job that will last is hardy and wont make me reluctant to go places :)

There is an 80 series in town that is entirely painted in deep orange "Tuff Deck" type finish. Often see it wearing a few weekend battle scars, but the paintwork always looks mint a day later, so I guess it does the job.

Yeah ive seen a burnt orange variation of some type of textured hard paint and yeah converted in weekend fun, but cleans up, i know its not everyone’s cup of tea but the old girl is a keeper and ive spent a bit of time getting her to where she is, then a few bits of rust have really made themselves known, so i thought what the heck get it sorted and a good paint job!

Following this as my old girl is starting to showing a few spots of rust in the body

A wrap will cost approx 6k and it doesn't last very long if you don't garage the vehicle.

A "raptor" (there are much better products than the Raptor brand) coat paint job depending on colour and amount of prep needed is similar coin. But will last an eternity lol

I am considering one of the raptor/Ute deck liner products for the same reason. I have a lot of gorse and tree scratches that just don't buff out.
Get a few people involved and do a couple of vehicles to keep the cost down.
Wrap isn't strong enough to withstand a scratch from a decent branch or Matagouri, Gorse etc.

You may of seen the Land cruiser that I mentioned. Think it belongs to someone at a local body shop

Mark - I have a car painter who does good work at very good prices here in Chch. He might have some ideas for you..

you can sprat "bed mud" on as thick as you want. if there's metal maggot underneath it will break through

hammerite......its good stuff and harder than hobs of hell.... its a 4x4 its not a show pony...you will likely keep it till its not worth bugger all so doing a hard wearing lasting paintjob by hand isnt going to drop price much long term..if however you intend to flick it off as one old lady driver...best to make it look flash.
a wise man once said "a 4 wheel drive is no good until you have got it stuck,dented it and scratched the paint"
untill then you wont drive it as hard as is sometimes needed to keep out of,or get out of the crap.

That’s why it’s getting the rust removed and all that sorted first!
@mudgripz the auto shop that ive got the truck booked in for the rust removed around the window and along the gutters are the ones that Neil recommended, ive a quote and im ok with it, not cheap but there will be some bits that will need to be cut out, he’s given me a rough quote for the paint job again, not cheap and two weeks its in the shop for, but he quoted 3 coats and they take all the doors, bonnets off and windows out and all that stuff, learnt my lesson not getting real mechanics etc to do the work!!! But ill give you a call :)

Roberlo Robliner is far better, harder finish, more durable, and tintable as well.
Its also cheaper

The paint shop mates and I use is Allied Auto Bodies at 109 Orbell St, Chch. 03 379 0208. Owner sold out recently and business now owned by chinese chap Edward, but seems same staff and philosophy. We've used them for occasional jobs for 10 years for the trucks and my sportscar panel touchups and found their work good - and at good prices. Just tell him you want a 4x4 panel respray job - and it doesn't need to be Queen St flash. Quotes by the panel.

So just doing a bit more looking into Roberlo Robliner, i will have a chat to the actual guy doing the spray painting and get some feed back around it. How many coats, the prep, costings etc, to give you some idea around the place that is doing the work, the vehicle will be there for two weeks, but as Mudgripz mentioned he used them in the past and they are well regarded. Im not going to post the quote just yet as i have an idea ;) so IF you are genuinely interested in getting your vehicle done let me know i will get mine done first get some before and after pics and post them, going to be honest i dont think the guy needs the business but no one ever turned down some good publicity?

I would be keen to see how you get on turtle, I'm trying to decide if ki stick with standard 2k paint or go to a beeline type product, it's a pretty straight 80 so not sure if I go the Mongrel offroad look or fresh and clean, my quad bike does most of the rough stuff for me now

Very few occasions when you'll need special 'tuff' coatings for 4x4 work. In umpteen years of Canterbury 4wd club trips for me (400-500 tracks) our club covered some real truck busters at times - Slabhut Creek, the Stamper, Moa Bones, Reefton area, coast-to-coast tracks, Mt Greenland etc - all in their heyday. But I never needed to repaint one panel on my 3 trucks, and most clubbies did not need to. One small dent.

The boys often polish trucks well before trip so branches slip across paint, and drive cautiously past/through plant/scrub/matagouri etc. Alot comes down to how you drive. I remember visiting another chch club and they loved talking about truck damage - seemed to take pride in it - but we did the same tracks and looked after trucks through the same challenges. Any 4x4 vets reading this know what I'm talking about.

Paint matters. Darker colours like my dark blue and wine red trucks show scratches easier because of their white/grey undercoat, whereas white trucks show scratches much less - as do gray paint trucks. Its easy to get into situations where you can scratch them up - a track overgrown since last trip, or new and different approach angles through an obstacle etc. But usually you can find a way to look after paint - and truck mechanicals. You can go on a club trip - have seen it so many times - where some get through without problems, but other guys smack the shite out of their vehicles. How you drive.

If scratches inevitable in your terrain, its likely cheaper to repaint 2-4 panels (about $200 per panel) every few years than spend 3-4k on a special coating. And hunting trips (for most of this site's members) are much much easier than club offroading on the vehicles. Hunting we may pass through occasional tricky terrain or a deeper river, but with club offroading you're often looking for the toughest possible challenges for our highly modified trucks. Done both for 50+ years and club 4x4ing much harder on vehicles.

Special 'tuff' coating could be the deal for a dedicated offroad 4x4, but no necessity for hunting 4x4s. Pick your colour, do the polishing, have a good light cut and polish compound for post trip tidy up
(eg Pacer), then pick your own approach into and through obstacles eg heavy growth. As mentioned above any 4x4 club veterans here will know exactly what I'm talking about. After first few club years when you throw your vehicles into everything, you learn to navigate obstacles to protect both paint and truck mechanicals. Can be done.

Saw one today (full body hammerite ute) on my way home.

a good friend of mine back in my teens had a fairly decent paint job on his lada niva
home exterior paint done with a roller

Heck, Chuck on a coat of blackboard paint and give the kids some chalk.

So im meeting with one of the reps for Roberto Robliner on Thursday at the paint shop, booked in for rust and primer coats as well as a test paint for next week and then a week later in for the the hole lot to be done. Will get some photos of the work before and after

so went with the Robliner, good suggestion @cambo just picked up the truck today after having the rust issues addressed and the "test" paint done, i think that was more so for the spray painters who honestly thought i was mad even suggesting the idea!

very happy with the rust work, Will has done a really good job as far as i can tell! the paint work looks good too, well i think it does and im the one paying ;)

here are a couple of shots contrasting the state of the paintwork and the new colour, also realise its in the shade and its a little dreary here in chch, the roof rack, bull bars and rear bumper will be black

that was exactly my response when a mate questioned me about it, i said that as it was shaped like a brick that the dimple effect would neutralise drag ;)

Easier to grip and push when STUCK .

So picked it up today, overall im happy with the paint job, a few little issues that need to be sorted but here is the end result

Cost wise, well more than i had initially budgeted, however i balance that out with all the windows came out and all the metal was checked for rust, where there was rust it was removed. the paint wasn't a stock standard paint, they took nearly everything off the body to paint

the team was good to deal with however realistically its a three week job for them

the paint will take a little to 100% cure but its certainly different!

Im spending the rest of the day cleaning inside the truck!

@mudgripz think i will go visit our diesel mechanic friend one night this week and catch up for a yarn and the next things to sort! have a couple of weeks off and the need to go sling the hammock in a tree and frighten either wallabies or bunnies!

For the age of the vehicle, being a bit over budget would be cheap insurance, knowing that with every window coming out, any sneaky rust has been dealt to. Ready to do another 400,000ks :thumbsup:
