I have a 1996 90hp two stroke Johnson that needs a bit of a tune up, check timing and the like..
Can anyone recommend someone in Taupō that can give the old girl a bit of love again??
I’m not wanting to fuck around with anyone that isn’t experienced with the old two smokes.

you could do a few things yourself to save you some money - new spark plugs- shine a torch into the petrol tank to make sure nice and clean i.e no rust flakes or debris floating around - they are very susceptible to stale fuel so make sure thats fresh - if you can take a sample of fuel from fuel lines check for contamination by looking at in a clean clear glass container - you can also change the prop gearbox oil with appropriate oil - they only have the crudest of air cleaners just check for bird nest damage and its all clean - most of a service is simple that maybe all it needs give it a test run and don't be scared to open it right out if you can when its hot - two strokes dont like a lot of low rev running

you are right there Russian 22 we ran about 6 two strokes at Waikaremoana new plugs clean fuel and full noise for a while cured a lot of evils - not being run for awhile was biggest problem especially the old premix models- stale fuel - always a bit shocked at how much the mechanic at Wairoa charged for a service on our big motors ( 225 hp 140 HP ) and how little he actually did - not a lot more than change leg oil and spark plugs

Cheers lads. I suspect the previous owner has fucked around with the timing and low idle as it’s a prick to try and get going in the mornings without stalling.
Every time I lower the fast idle lever she stalls so the only way to get it going is to slam it down and quickly put it in gear to keep the revs up. She also skips and splutters for the first 20mins until it’s warm and then you don’t have a single issue for the rest of the day..
Even on earmuffs it’s skipping and shaking a bit so I’m keen for a good tune up and timing check. Carb clean if required.
It’s got new plugs, fuel line, tote tanks, new oil, always run with new ethanol free 91, sea foam fuel additive..
And don’t worry I open her up all right..:thumbsup:

If the old owner has 'played' with the carbs they may take an experienced hand to get them back running right. Idle circuits on 2 stroke carbs work the opposite to 4 strokes: they are air orientated, not fuel orientated like 4T's. infrequently used premix carbs always benefit from a strip and assemble, clean all the air and fuel galleries, ensure the jets are unblocked etc. Gaskets in good nick. Once you have paid for them to be sorted by an experienced 2 stroke mechanic you should be fine to do the servicing yourself.
other than above a compression test every now and then wouldn't go astray
fuel and fuel storage is one issue with outboards -at Waikaremoana I replaced all fuel for our many premix out boards on a regular basis - old fuel went into the chainsaw and scrub bar fuel store ( we used a lot ) and new mix made for out boards - I used a product called stabil which is a two stroke fuel conditioner - damn good but watch out a lot of two stroke lawnmowers for example don't like it - but there are other two stroke fuel conditioners - Yamaha used to do their own brand - I would not store fuel for more than say 4-5 months - one thing I do now is use a plastic label on all fuel cans - and for our chainsaws at work stihl oil which dyed the fuel purple for two stroke - fire store had red cans for four stroke and blue for two stroke - the fuel tank on pumps same - two stroke mix will not store for any length of time without a conditioner -
If it takes 20 minutes to run warm would also check the thermostats.
