    Aftermarket motorcycle ABS

I am navel gazing a trip to Europe next year and buying a non ABS bike to ride Europe and Scandinavia, and then bring it back via the States.
The lack of ABS means it cannot be registered here in NZ but there are aftermarket options.
Does anyone know if aftermarket ABS would meet the standard or does it have to be factory fitted?
And yes I know that with the cost of shipping etc, I'd be better off selling it when I'm done, I'm just weighing up options.

    Cheers

Why non ABS, are you doing the TET? As far as I'm aware there's nothing to stop you fitting aftermarket abs to a bike as long as the system meets NZ standards, you'd be better off asking a bike shop tbh as they'd be upto speed on current requirements. Bear in mind that the non ABS law is changing for certain trails/enduro bike that meet the definitions as set out in the relevant legislation, there should be something on NZTA's web site, think the law comes into effect later this year so ABS for your chosen bike may become a non issue. I went away and did some digging:

Land Transport Rule: Light Vehicle Brakes 2002
Remove the requirement for enduro/or trial motorcycles to have an anti-lock braking system or combined braking systems unless they are being used for sanctioned competition; and remove the definition of sanctioned competition.

I believe this comes into effect on #rd November this year, have added the NZTA definitions of enduro and trial motorcycles as well.
