    Big end seal

    My old nissen patrol y61 big end seal leaking oil,4.2 Tdi.The auto gear box,drive shaft needs removing.Transfer case stays attached to gear box(Very heavey).All this needs removed to refit new seal and refit all of the above.
    The question is,how long would it roughly take for a nissen dealer ship garage with all the right gear to do this job.
    Any machanics out there that could give us an idea of hours for this job.Thanks for your time in answering my question.

    Not a mechanic, but have done it in 6hrs to drop the box out, replace rear-main seal and re-install the box.

    Box and transfer-case is 200+ kg, so do need the right gear to make life easy!

    Have done it in the garage with a pair of trolley jacks, and it ain’t fun!

    It’s the rear main you’re talking about? The big end, is the end of the conrod that connects to the crank.
    Best part of a day to pull the gearbox and replace the seal.
    Get the PCV valve (Positive crankcase ventilation) checked they gum up and you get pressure build up in the sump that blows the seals. @gqhoon is on to it I’ve only done one patrol and it was years ago.

    a day to a day and a half id guess as long as everything comes apart nicely and you dont fuk anything taking it apart done the 2 trolley jack thing fuk that thats if we talkn rear main

    Rear end seal,I wandered why that big seal was there.lols.Thanks guys for yr advise.il get that pvc vent looked at one day.Job took 16 hrs by Nissen.Since the job was done 2 weeks ago,iv done about 1500k and the seal is not lecking.Bit excessive in the hours but 200kg + gearbox transfercase,guess they gota be carefully.Its my 1st big expence on the engine in 15yrs,so I cant complain.
    Roll on the 4.2Td I.

    That's a carpenter trying to talk engines,il get it right one day.

    Work shop is a bit different to back yard job they have to do it properly and guarantee it

    This 4.2tdi done 516000ks,iv never touched the engine till now.Purrs long just buitifully.

    Our apprentice is always charged out at "full whack" because in the event of a f#$K up or whoopsie or what ever it takes a qualified guy (or 2) to sort the job out an you cannot charge twice. Any tradesman helping the apprentice is not generally charged for unless its a 2 man job
    However like most companies it seems there are not many apprentices now anyway and the qualified guys are getting older and more easily broken

    and you need to pay them more as no new appretices = less tradesmen simple laws of supply and demand
