Pre filter probably good idea.
Its not so much dirt as water that stuffs em i think.
We have no "pre filter" on ours but I try and only fill up from stations with a high diesel 'turnover' and avoid 'little" stations in out of the way places where possible. But then I have to ask permission to use the wife's truck anyway :(
I've fitted heaps of the aux fuel filter systems to Hilux's and Cruisers.
Mainly on farm vehicles where supply is more likely to be contaminated. Very worth while doing if using farm supply.
Not so much of a problem if always filling from a servo. Still could be an extra insurance though.
The decent kit isn't cheap though Munsey.
Pop into my workshop (Ilam Toyota) and have a chat sometime ;)
As a diesel mechanic for trucks and earth moving equipment I get a lot of issues with water in diesel if common rail or not,I'd recommend a water seperater filter put in by all means as they filter out a lot of water and condensation in fuel, install as you would a normal in-line filter:-) any questions just ask mate
My old hilux was a great swimmer. I drained my tank once, recon i must have got 4 or 5 liters of water before any diesel come out:D
The old 2.8 s where great swimmers until you touched the clutch :( Completely filled my cab up when salmon fishing one day, was way deeper that I estimated . Still was running but no drive (water between clutch plates I believe ) Cost a fecken fortune to replace all the oils and then took forever to dry out . Smelt like a wet dog for ever after that
What you need to stop is emulsified water and diesel
Most filters (I know toyotas don't )will stop water but they will not stop emulsified water
There are kits that do the job
If you don't fit one make sure the filter is changed every service reguardless of if the light come on or not
