1971 involves a huge enmass of bikers to Napier. The police were overwhelmed. It lead to law change and the era of the biker terrorising the highways was gone from NZ life.
Ah, the days of continual bike maintenance, drip trays in the lounge, as we kept the bikes inside as they were so stealable, but didn't want to get evicted from the flat so tried to look after the carpet.
Found out that Nylocks were no match for a Norton Commando's engine vibrations, and had to use red loctite from one end of the bike to the other![]()
We went through pretty much the same thing in South Africa during the 70's. Bars were a lot lower, more 'plastics', but the same antics and skulduggery, I'm sure.
I could never understand the obsession with Ape hangers as they were Bloody awful for open road speeds.
Left the standard bars on my Commando.
( it was a lot smoother than the early Dommies )
My last bike was an Army Indian but I owned a lot of the huffier cars that were in the background of those photos!
