Ford Ranger Raptor - anyone else thinking a 2L diesel is a bad idea

While I agree with a lot of the modifications on the Raptor, like uprated shocks, losing the spring leaf rear end, increased track etc, the one thing that does not sit well is a pissy little 2L 4 cylinder diesel pushing it along.
Design considerations for the new engine were apparently power, economy and response. All of those were ticked off, as the engine is lighter, more powerful, and more economic to run.
The one design consideration they seem to have missed off was reliability. Would you honestly tow anything with it, or expect it to haul a heavy ute along for 100's of thousands of k's.

All of my previous 4WD's had either 4.2L 6 cylinder diesels, or more recently 3L 4 cylinder diesels. The big lazy diesel engines had no issues with 500,000km. Could this be a realistic expectation with the new 2L Raptor?

It's the way they are going, Amarok is a 2.2 triton 2.4.... Heard the new Nevara will be 2.2...

Still like my 4.2 non turbo slug, it gets there everytime but no need to rush things...

Pretty sure there is a forum rule about politics, religion and especially fords[emoji16]

But I hear ya. Seems everything is getting smaller in the engine department and there is no real world proof of reliability doing the hard yards yet that I know of.

Yep rules are nothing over 3 litres I believe, Still my 2 litre Cosworth used to humble a few V8s, especially the Holden ones!!
2 litre ute is an embarrassment, Bugger!!

we have a 2.5 triton and its better acceleration than the ranger or colorado. even better when you turn the egr off

There's an interview with the guy who ran the project and he says its not about size but performance, over the whole vehicle. They're more interested in the suspension and chassis design than the engine and that it's not a tow truck but more a Baja style race ute


Still, a 2L?

Engineering has improved over the last 10 -15 years higher compression rates and boost pressures can make up for lack of cubic inches, as cosworths and escorts proved 20 plus years ago. The downside is the motor is running under greater stress, not really an issue if its designed for it i think.

What year, I use a 2012 Triton and had no issues so far. Even ran it with no coolant for a while and never overheated

You cannot convince me that a big engine loafing along will be more reliable and last long with less running costs than a little one running at mach 5 to make the same power. Theres always a trade off. Look at the hand-grenades that are modern utes, 100K on the clock or less and major repairs that dealers seem to think are just normal wear and tear

I agree, these days its more power, more revs and smaller size!.... To my basic mind that tells me that the smaller motor is working harder and therefore more stressed and will not last as long in the years to come. I'm comparing this to say a 4.0 litre Toyota diesel or 4.2 Nissan version, which seem to keep chugging along year after year.

I compare it to Bathurst all those years ago when they brought out the Sierra cosworth's. They were under half the capacity but made the same power as the V8's, but because they were highly strung 2.0 litre engines they were all hand genades!

Still a neat looking truck though!

its easy as, i made a switchon / off unit for $10. send me a pic of of your air filter system as they sem to vary allot. basically if you confuse the em system that its freezing cold outside it shuts off
