Hilux making a very odd noise

Started today, noticed when I fired it up after work. If you can get what I'm saying, it sounds kinda like that cliche hot rod sound - I thought something might have been poking into the fan, but i popped the bonnet and cranked the throttle cable and it is definitely coming from the motor/engine bay somewhere. My thought was maybe the start motor isn't fully disengaging from the fly wheel, it has been over starting for a while. It starts and runs fine, performs like normal but constantly has that god awful sound, which speeds up relative to the revs. Hopefully my mechanic mate can come look after work. Any ideas?

It isn't very loud at all but definitely noticeable, sounds like something is sticking into something that's rotating. Fucked bearing? I dunno.

Have you asked it to be quiet?????
If not i usualy kick something... it makes me feel a bit better when things arnt workin!
The third option is to wear earplugs when its running and the noise should go away!

If you load up the thrust bearing (clutch) does it go away ?

Crank pulley loose and flogging the key?
    Harmonic balancer rooted?
There under load? Clutch in or out any different?

No difference clutch in or out. Mate came around and had a listen with ear muffs and a screw driver (mechanic thing I guess), said the cylinders, alternator etc sound fine. He said it sounds like something is loose and rattling, but no idea what, exhaust manifold or something. His other best guess was that it's dropped an injector. He said to him it sounds like an idling air compressor on a truck. Oh yeah we pulled off the oil filter, the oil isn't contaminated or anything. Off to the mechanic I guess.

Ok... I just turned it on so that the oil filter would take up a liter so I can top up, and the noise is gone...what the fuck
