@thejavelin Thanks,I just knew SST was going to rear it's ugly head.Attachment 63131Behold an SST was bornAttachment 63132
Unfortunately my longreach hex socket was not up to the task(split). Will have to get a 19mm impact socket
timing belt? or crank seal? or water pump?
I have sockets you can borrow if you like. Another easy way to crack the crank bolt is to use a long breaker bar, lay it against the underside of the drivers side chassis rail and flick the key for a second.
how come
You don't want the motor to start even for a split second
ive done more than i can remember i use to do it that way sometimes the engine started never had it cause any problems you just switch it off if you give it a quick flick it wont start now days tho ive got a special tool that loosens and tightens as well
Used to have one, gave it to my mate when I sold my ln106
I though the "Holy Hilux"'s never broke
Ive rebuilt more than I can remember and used to use that method to remove the bottom pulley but had the motor start one day and tho only for a second the keyway on the bottom pulley let go resulting in a damaged crankshaft. What fun. I since made a tool consisting of a bottom pulley with a shaft welded to it that when bolted to the bottom pulley anchors against the chassis locking the pulley while the use of a decent bar undoes the pulley bolt. I made a simple gadget that allows the timing cover to be removed while the bottom pulley is still in place ,this made timing belt idler and tensioner replacement a 1 hour job instead of 3 hours.
/obviously mine wasnt a holy one after the wee irish prick murphys efforts with the slut on sunday.stillwe did get her back to CHCH .son&mates have contacts with plenty of spares so he reckons shell be up&about in 2-4weeks and can get her arse thrashed round CHCH before they bring her to arthurs for me to pick up.me travelled back to greymouth in the mrs mondeo.
dont worry one wee scratch in this puppy and my nutsack wil lbe her new coin purse!!
Had to use a bit of sched 40 on the buster bar but the homemade SST did the job.wasn't game to try the key.
Bugger, A bit more terminal than a crank seal
That happening in less than a second would indicate a problem that was already there in over 40 years in the trade that to me would indicate that the pully was already loose or it had had a dodgy repair previously but I'm not an expert just my experience with them
How do you take the front cover off without taking the pully off its a one piece cover that goes around the pully isn't it you'd need to cut it wouldn't you
I cut the cover leaving a small amount connected at the bottom pulley. I made a clamp arrangement which pulled the cover together when fitted. The cut was not a straight cut . I had a fleet which required each van to be done at about 9 monthly intervals with minimal down time. I only have 2 of the older 3l vehicles now and they are for backup only. The new 1kd,2kd engines are a vast improvement for timing belts.
Keep an eye on the glow plugs from memory some had ceramic tips had a few come off if your really lucky you get away with a new piston and rings but sometimes it stuffs the bores
