I'm still trying to nail down exactly what it is with the GDI engines that gets them such a bad rep - mechanic I asked reckoned that the direct injection side of it means that the upper cylinder and intake valves don't get fuel over them and that means they get covered in crap from the EGR and PCV setups. I asked him if blocking the EGR and emissions stuff off fixes the issues and he changed the topic to Mitsi diesels...

Another guy who works with the things was going on about the fuel pump and injectors crapping out due to shit fuel, I asked him if that's the main issue and if that's the case if fitting a 1micron supplementary fuel filter would help. He started going on about the new 2L Ford wet belt engines being a load of crap - not really helpful.

I was chatting to a guy with an early 2000's Paj and his one had to have a lot of work on the bottom end of the engine so I asked him what he thought. He reckoned his was a failed bottom end bearing, but had no idea why as it was being serviced by a dealer and everything else was apparently fine. He reckoned he wasn't towing with it and was mostly doing open road driving and longer trips so shouldn't have been anything to do with that.

So I don't really know - without being able to pin that on something other than crap fuel and the effects of that on the fuel system which a lot of different designs are affected by in some way I think it's a bit of an urban legend thing. A bit like the PX Rangers and BT50's being really prone to blowing up where in reality for the numbers of them on the road the stats are not out of line with anything else in terms of failures.

I am wondering if what we did on the older LPG engines would help with the gunking up issues by dosing upper cylinder lubricant into the system by vacuum dosing direct into the manifold. Morey used to do a dosing kit for their upper cylinder lubricant - I think they call it a Power Booster kit or somesuch...
