    Land cruiser transfer case service....

Hi team, I have a stuffed output bearing on the transfer case (the one heading to the rear diff)
Just checking if anyone has done this before and know of any 'traps' before I pull it apart?

Looks like a speedo cable and a driveshaft to remove, then the output bearing housing/rear cover will come off easy as....

Or am I about to open a booby trap?

    Cheers for any advice, 40mm

Google up on youtube, there is a few people with vids on it. Seems like a couple of fiddly bits to look out for on the speedo unit and associated bits.

Go to Terrian Tamer and order a rebuild kit.
Just did mine on a 45 series that I am doing a resto on. Was pretty simple.

Double gay? Probably can't say that though...

It is a fair point, replace the rear bearing and seal by itself and likely you'll find it's still noisey and sub expectations. Last one of these I did I got a wrecker case with a 3-month warranty and dropped one out and the other straight in. Much less farting about and lots of labour saving but more expensive than just getting the kit. Worth considering though?

Most of those cases run taper bearings if I am correct, and need 2 thou or so preload, or a set kg pull before turning. Hard to do without pulling to pieces. And as others have said, if one bearing has gone bad there's no oil filter in there to stop the pureed contents of that bearing from circulating around all the other splash lubricated bearings and begining the downward spiral to destination fucked

Yeah, sounds pretty much like what I am expecting now.
There is at least 2mm play each way on the driveshaft end.

What model cruiser Is it mate? We deal directly with terrain tamer at work for parts so mite be able to get you a real sharp deal on rebuild kit if need 1, or any parts. Also I’d recommend using a double lip seal on the gearbox to transfer shaft, it gets rid of the over filling of transfer box from gearbox that is so common on early cruiser box’s. Auto box’s run the double lip seal but manuals don’t, probably a 2$ part and is listed for automatic kit. Everything else is straight forward.
