Diff locks if you can afford them. While I only use mine to get me out of tricky situations, they also have the ability to get you into much trickier situations than if you didn't have them! I.e. You tend to push the boundaries a tad :D
I have a LSD on the back end of my Safari, can be a bitch on a tight roundabout in the wet.
Diff locks....front and rear, independantly on/off....when you want traction bad you need every bit you can get. Forget to turn them off when back on the road and you will end up in a hedge though......
I'd also convert an old ac unit to a tyre pump so you can let your tyres down then pump them back up straight afterwards.
Torsion diffs are really good and I'm sure you can fit them straight into a safari/patrol or most Toyotas. They work the opposite of a normal diff, giving all the drive to the wheel with the traction. A mate of mine in Wanaka has fitted a number to serious off road rigs down there, especially in the front for steering and traction and a few customers have even removed their diff lockers in the rear after having fitted them in the front so they could be worth looking into.
Pneumatic diff lockers, can't do a winch challenge without them.
So would you go factory fitted or aftermarket ?
ARB Air Lockers tough as all get out the only issue is those toymotors C.V joints, they are as crispy as a carrot so to save any issue buy a Nissan Patrol that is if you want to get back home.

Finally bought my self a Patrol after fucking around with leaf springs and hilux's.
Diff lock for the win.
Coils too, coils are king.
This is with the 20 year old fucked standard suspension and sway bars front and rear still attached.

Got the second hand break?;) the most redeeming feature of a safari.

I don't follow?
Lots of safaris have a second"hand brake" the majority of there owners don't know what it actually is and wonder why there truck rolled down the hill lol.
Its a rear sway bar disconnect and helps articulation and ride quality a shit load when disconnected.

Not so common they also come out with a rear electric diff lock making them almost as good as a under powered under optioned landcruiser of the same era

if you want to spend serious money on diff lockers (looking at ARB for example) get some E-lockers, no air supply to worry about. for air lockers, would get yukons, cheaper than ARBs.
Lockers are awesome - if you know how to use them properly.
The average driver wouldn't know how to use them correctly and would get into way more crap than they could handle.
A properly operating LSD is going to be more usable to the average 4wder.
But to a driver used to his vehicle offroad, and is well used to offroad driving, even just 1 locker can make all the difference.
I don't have anything. just 4 wheel drive on the hilux and it always seems to get me where I want to go and back. the more stuff u have the further u want to take it then nek minute...go looking for a tractor tow out please farmer ute over the bank!:o
handy if you go over a track that gets your wheels in the air and you cant get around it. lock em up, roll on over. generally means you can also take obstacles a lot slower rather than having a run up then a spin up bouncing everywhere and damaging shit.
The 1988/89 safari's had a rear LSD, swap bar disconnect and often a PTO winch which is what my one has....Im not aware of an electric locking diff. The only thing wrong with it is the 4.2 deisel lacks the grunt to match the rest of it.....
towed the boat home today with my wagon. Holy shit it needs a turbo.
(my boat is no longer the one in the pic)
I can't imagine life without lockers. I reckon its saved me money, no more run ups at speed to make a tricky part. Locker on, low 4, crawl your way through anything
Oh and Timmay never believed me but coils really are king
Lockers are great.....
but you need to be sure how to use them, 2 were killed on a 4x4 run I was on when they turned down a tow out as they wouldn't need it, they engaged the lockers to get out of a drain...gave it a bit to much and shot out of the drain...... and being locked kept going straight and over the edge rolling to the bottom.
If you get them learn when and how to use them !!
Yep, not much turning will happen all locked up. Rear only not too bad.
Can also break shit being a dick on hard surfaces all locked up like backing into a bank and skiding it around like a bulldozer instead of backing 500m up the track to turn around... But i wouldn't know anything about that:rolleyes:
