You can't just fit fwh's to the front to make it part itme 4wd. A modified spool is required in the transfer case.
Just fitting fwh's you will have to drive around with the centre diff locked - which will destroy the transfer pretty damn quickly.
Having part time 4wd makes a big difference to economy. That's probably the biggest reason people do it. But then you have to weigh up the cost of the kit and fitting over fuel and maintenance savings etc.
Doesn't effect drivability negatively at all.
