Mercs up to 140 HP are badge engineered by Tohatsu, I'm pretty sure. Price the Tohatsu 60, it might be a bit cheaper but it's the same unit.

I was told my 2013 Mercury was Merc branded and built.
Tohatsu were building up to 40 hp only. I also researched myself and found the same thing.
All the leading brands it seems, can be made up of each others parts. Yamaha built a heap of Mercs until 2006.
There is also talk that outboards built in China are having less warranty claims than those built in the states and Europe. Go figure?
