Thread: Suzuki Jimny

Recently compared the new 3 door vs 5 door, the difference is huge and not in a good way! The 5 door is made in India and it really shows, handling was awful and the fit and finish on everything was shit compared to the 3 door which is still made in Japan. The rear seats in the 5 door are tiny and don't fold down nicely either.

I don't really know where the 5 door sits in the market, I get that the public asked them for it but IMO they really messed it up.

Great off road, look cool, that’s about it. Handle like shit at anything over 80kmh, gutless and thirsty

Got an old awd 2 door rav4 that does the same thing now for 1/8th the price

Apart from the great off-road bit, i thought you were describing a dodge ram ?

underpowered, uncomfortable and uneconomic. off road they are great and go just about anywhere, onroad is a different issue as they ring their guts out at 100k

When shopping for my Jimny I looked at the older 1,300cc model but decided to go for the new model as I found the older one a little cramped for my large frame. My comments are for the later model. For my use I have found it quite large enough. The back seats have never been used so there is plenty of room for the things I need to take to the range including a small portable bench rest made from a sawhorse, 4 foot screens for the chronograph etc. My old trailer, that I had for 40 years, had become too heavy for me to move so I bought a small and light Kea trailer so if it won't fit inside it goes on that. I towed it up to Taupo and back with some 1.3 x 1.2 metre targets and it went much better than expected and not much harder on petrol than normal. For my use it is ideal and would buy another in a flash.
Only you can decide what you need as what you have said is a second car for commuting Happy choosing,

The newer indian made Suzuki's can be difficult to get parts for. Was told 3 month wait and $400ish for one engine mount. Part came from India. Couldn't find any aftermarket options. This was for Nana's wee 2012 hatchy thing... But the dealership said it's a long wait for most of the indian made parts.

I had one for a couple of years,went everywhere I needed it to. Hunted all over the North Island in it,might have even gotten a shag or two in it.

Have had a couple of Dodge Rams,can't remember getting lucky in either,so on that basis choose a Jimmy for sex appeal.

Sounds like they haven't come very far from the 1970's Suzuki Jimneys. Mine would go absolutely anywhere, but if it was too steep the passenger needed to get out or it would run out of ring ding dings (2 stroke 530cc engine. Soft top, bloody noisy, sitting on 5 grand @ 95kph, doing 22mpg (13L/100km for those young'ns out there.

I did own a suzuki 413 30 years ago and it went alright. I probably need to test drive one. I realize its not going to be no Hilux but i don't plain on traveling around Nz in it.

I am 178cm and can sleep in mine OK,seats fold to make a good bed base have a fridge etc just don't take too much gear amazing what you don't need or can comress down inside clothes sleeping bag etc

I've had a LJ 50 rag top with fabric doors a SJ 413 a Samurai still have a 3 door vitara and now also the new Jimny which is the first that I can sleep in.



I like them but they are not for everyone. When we need space or power I have 2 Nissan Safari's one with a turbo and PTO winch.

I fixed that problem in my old 2003 Jimny with a bottle of nitrous, well until I made some extra holes in the block.
