I actually can't see ANY part of my future where I WON"T have a ute.....I mean, where else yer gonna put the carcasses, dog, firewood, dog, hay, dog, firewood, motorbike, dog, carcasses, big stuff you've just collected that wasn't so big you needed your trailer, tools, hitchhikers....I could go on but nup I just can't see that day arriving whilst I'm capable/allowed to drive...did I tell you I REALLY REALLY LOVE my manual 4WD Hilux?

100 percent. Every vehicle i’ve owned was a manual until I bought by 22 Hilux in auto. Love it, won’t be going back.

Manuals, Mercators and Bullers. Relics of the past.

I've driven heaps of auto's, my first was a Mitsi Gallante, which was my first car when I moved to NZ, cheap as chips, think I paid $600 Wof/Rego, first big downhill I got to, took my foot off the gas and couldn't figure out why we were still accelerating.....what? No engine braking? bugger that and yeah I know the new ones have some form of that and hill start assist and lane detection and collision avoidance and radars and and and and yes I know that all the new trucks have auto boxes and did you know they still can't select gears appropriately like well trained humans can, just ask anyone who's driven a Volvo and ask them what happens when it's on cruise control going downhill, drops a cog and tries to send the pistons through the cab floor all this "idiot proofing" is just turning barely adequate drivers into passengers and, if I momentarily borrow a tinfoil hat, is just another way of dumbing down the population.....like the holocaust survivors and german citizens said "at first it was just a little...and then a little more...and then a little more...until it was so much we didn't know how to go back" - that's not a verbatim quote but it's the essence, look at history, history repeats..with monotonous regularity.

I digress, manual is where it's at, the very fact of having a manual keeps you more present to the task at hand, also, loss of traction, try doing that with ya traction controlled, stability assist, abs boring, built by accountants and men in grey suits whose idea of adventure is using a blue pen to underline something, eunuchs!

In terms of the tech and the dash in the hilux that’s something I actually really like about mine. It’s got everything I want but it is simple and intuitive to operate. I get in cars with a “nicer and flasher” dash like my wife’s highlander and it takes a bit of googling to work out the bloody thing. The only thing I wish mine had is wireless apple car play. Having to plug into a cable is a little annoying but not the end of the world.

Highlander probably not the best example, I actually really like that car haha. Have been in other newer utes anyway and all the flash gadgetry is complicated to operate.

Yep, thats why I like stick shift, heater/ac and a radio with bluetooth, anything more than that and it takes me 10 minutes to feel I know enough about what does what to be able to drive the bleedin things!

My son reports that the Hilux and Ranger are yesterday's news. The army's new Vamtac (made in Spain) made an appearance at Trentham today... it left a really good impression on him as a super capable piece of kit.

Wading depth on the light vehicle option is less than a Ranger, but more than Hilux (700mm).
