Thread: Trailer rims query

Ok so I've got a tandem trailer that runs low profile stupidly expensive tyres 225/50/12.5 and the rims run what I'm assuming by measurement to be 5x120.65 hubs (HQ)
So have been looking around for a spare rim and there is nothing I've found.

So just wondering if anyone out there has come across steel 13inch rims in the HQ 120.65mm sizes?

the next options are replace the hubs to a better pcd standard or the nuclear option suggested by the manufacturer to replace the axles.

thoughts anyone?

for some reason hq stud pattern is fukn hard to find did that exercise a long time ago swapped the hubs to ford stud pattern.

As far as I have found - not many of those around now. If/when you pop a bearing or have some other damage to a hub you will need to upgrade to something newer - the main question I have is clearance for the tyres you go to with the guard setup on your trailer.

The sort of standard sizes in 13" (which I expect you will go with) are 165R13LT which are a little taller than what you have I think, and the 'compact' 195/50R13C which is a smidge shorter. Pretty cheap in both though the LT is better I think. The LT is what most trailers run, Light Truck radial construction and quite high wear resistance and load carrying capacity.

What will settle the question is how much clearance you have so the tyres don't rub with the springs fully compressed (think fully loaded trailer running over a speed bump at an angle and the axle at full upwards motion).

Also, will replacement hubs fit your axle stubs in terms of bearing sizes and spacing and the inner seal on the seat - if the axle stubs are not compatible with the new hubs either need to replace the stubs or depending how the axles are welded up might even need new axles as the cheaper option unless you can do it yourself. If the trailer isn't braked now is the time to do that too - much nicer trailers to tow with override braking fitted.

I think the stud pattern is 5x4.75”

Trailparts should have rims but they won’t be cheap.

Any engineering shop would be able to drill your hubs to Falcon stud pattern between the Holden pattern real easily which opens up a whole world of cheap rim options.

12.5 is Toyota rims
Also nothing hq is metric

Yep, could be good but by the time you buy new studs and get the work done it might be cheaper in the longer term to replace everything that isn't compatible now and go to an option you can get replacement parts for? I'd check the bearing sizes and spacing off the hubs and axles that are on there and see if the current available ones (trojan?) fit as a first step. If the current hubs are fairly recent versions they may take the standard bearings and seals, and have the standard bearing spacing so the common off-the-shelf hubs in the current standard stud pattern just drop on. if not and you need to replace the axle stubs, I'd probably think it's cheaper to go down that route than redrilling the studs on the current hubs...

I dont recall those rims as being HQ pattern, pretty sure they are Falcon, along with the 13.5" that came from Japan in containers from wrecked light Toyota trucks.
This chart tells you how to measure a 5 stud correctly. If Ford 5 stud AKA Falcon, the stud to stud measurement X will be 67.183mm.

If you are replacing the whole hub, I will make a suggestion. If you can, make the stud pattern and size the same as your towing vehicle. You end up with a spare tyre on the trailer and another on the car. With a tandem trailer, you now have a complete spare set of tyres if soething goes horribly wrong...

As much as id like to do that would require an axel swap to under springs and guard changes as well

We had similar issues on single trailer...had mk3 rims..the L300 vans are the same... Got sick of replacing bearings so put new axel,hubs n studs on it retaining same rims... It wasn't hugely expensive to do. Our tandem trailer is pain in arse with four tyres of same profile...I'm far better off running taller tyre on from axel otherwise it towed by taller vehicle,the front tyres only touch road going over bumps... Too easy to switch rims around to suit. Worth considering if changing tyre size to something more simple. 13" is still pretty easy to get cheap. There are dedicated trailer tyres,two of mine have taxi on them....very basic tyre that's wearing well.

Repco and probably lots of places have galvanised multifit rims available.
Have at least 2 different pattern stud holes.
Be worth a look.
