Whats everyones opinion that knows motors that cause these rings on daihatsu to go?

Had a daihatsu terios that went fine but had a temp problem which ended up a blown headgasket.
Just got the head done, new gaskets, waterpump etc and picked it up Friday. Took it hunting on saturday, drove a hour on open road, didnt go as good as when took it in. Smoked a little in second gear, missed a couple of times, slight lack of power from what it was before it got fixed but got to where i was going without any other issues.
Checked the oil before the return trip and was bone dry! No leaking or blowing oil out of engine, didnt smoke anywhere near enough for it to use it all, only thing i can thing of is they gave it back to me with no oil in it.??
Put some (only a little) oil in it that had in back of wagon, thought be enough to get home. run slightly worst on way home, missed , slightly rough. Stopped at garage and put 4litres in, just filled it.
Now with full oil smoked more, smells like burnt rings, couldnt get up the small hill just before my place without being in first and some smoke.
Not happy, took it in to be fixed and now its worst in big way, back too them tomorrow, any ideas but thinkthey gave it back without no oil and burnt rings from the hour drive!
Oil filter doesnt look changed, surely doing such major work you change the oil and filter as standard.....at least check the f level

Sounds like a right mess, great wee wagons though. Really want to know how they would go with a set of decent tyres, snorkel opened out exhaust and an inch or so of lift.... Reckon they could go more places than a lot of bigger '4*4'

I have heard of people removing the carbon deposits from the top of the pistons when the head is off and the crud going down between the piston and bore and causing problems. I seem to remember most sources saying just leave it but an old mechanic friend said he would put the piston near tdc and put grease in the gap, clean the crowns and move the pistons to bdc and wipe out the grease which had caught all the carbon.

Probably cleaned the block surface with emery cloth and all the aluminuim filings and grit has gone down the bores and buggered them now.
