2021 Big Bore - North Island

Righto boys and girls. @BRADS has kindly offered to let us invade his paddock & woolshed again .

Pencil in Sat 2 October 2021, and get cracking on reloading for your portable canons.

Just off the SH50, near Ongaonga (Waipukurau in the Hawke's Bay).

Format should be similar to last years event - 20 shots (box of ammo) will cover you for all the stages.

+/-5 stages

Balloons, Shooting Sticks, Jungle Lane, Long Distance (200m haha), Charging Lion

Most shots will be in the 25 to 75m range, so open sights encouraged (you get extra style points)

Anything 40 cal and over will be in "big balls" class, may make concessions for 358 or 375...

Prize will be a box of chocolates. Entry fee around $ 30, not looking to make money, just cover expenses and give koha to land-owner etc.

@Tuckerbox has put his hand up to upgrade Cecil the friendly lion into something truly terrifying. Come prepared ! :P

The idea is that this is a day for "heavy artillery", the rifles that sit in the back of the safe and only see the light of day once a year. Preference will be given to calibers 40 and over. But if you shoot something like a 9.3x62, 375 H&H or even 358, you would still be ok.

Please don't ask me if you can bring your 308/270/whetever.... Several guys have offered large rifles for the day - get in touch with them and come have some fun.

I'll send out bank details in the email. If you cancel up to 7 days before the event, you will receive a full refund. The entry fee will get you into the event, and we will have a sausage sizzle and cold drink back at the shearing shed.

Camping spots will be available at the shearing shed on Fri night. Alternatively there are holiday parks in Waipukurau and Waipawa, and the Tikokino Hotel also has some accommodation.

The "filthy few" (muzzle loaders) will fit in nicely with the rest of the big boomer crowd - we are not too picky, as long as the bore is LARGE, you are welcome.

If more than one person plans to shoot a muzzle loader, I will run a 3rd class (in addition to the normal irons and optics) and adjust stage timing for you guys.

Seriously though, apart from the possible need of gun bearers and the extra time it would take to run the shoot is there any reason you can't bring several larger specimens to either use or let other less well endowed folks have a go?

Marty, no problem bringing other toys. Same as last year, we should have time for everyone to have a go with various rifles after the last stage.

I'd prefer if guys keep it simple and use one rifle for the comp. It makes allocating classes a lot easier on my side. I'm happy to consider exceptions for the charging lion stage, muzzle loader will struggle there, but again, if we have a muzzle loader class, can always make it a single shot at the lion...

I would not even ask.... If those toys were operational I think the element of surprise would be the best tactic!

@40mm, on a serious note.

The 57 will be fine, you might get a mild ribbing for bringing the low-powered version of a undersized cartridge, haha.

We had a couple of 9.3x62s last year.

Obviously Covid is making it pretty hard to plan events at this stage... As an organizer, compliance around L2.x restrictions for socializing after the shoot is the tough one.

I intend to make a go / no-go call after the Sep 13 announcement re alert levels in Auckland.

About a 1/4 of the registered competitors are from Auckland. Two of those are helping with the running of the event...

I can understand that. I'm a committee member on my local club and we are having that same discussion. Last time 2 was easy to manage, but now the goal posts have shifted.
One concern is how are people expected to drink a coffee let alone eat a pie wearing a mask.😊

Simple solution for that one Marty ;)

@ebf, I think you will find the correct terminology is 'RED CHINA FLU'

Can you imagine the outrage if a bunch of despicable shooters were to socialise and one of them had the RED CHINA FLU, infecting the others and starting a cluster!

It would be international news.

Message received and understood. I will await the outcome with keen anticipation. In the event that the event is cancelled for reasons related to Auckland being a cesspit of COVID-19 evilness then I will toss up whether to run the gauntlet of border control just to give young Brads a cuddle. Gosh I miss his tanned bald dome. Ha ha ha ha

If date changes may be able to go.
At moment looking at "maybe" trip with a couple mates doing the first weekend fishing and me an armed tramp.
But last year very busy.
If Auckland still locked down numbers might be reduced.

With the announcement today that L4 restrictions remain in Auckland, I have decided to delay the event. BRADS and I have been talking over the last couple of weeks, and we are both firm on not wanting to be the shooting event that makes the news headlines for the wrong reasons in these Covid times...

My reasoning:

1) Around 1/4 of the competitors registered so far come from Auckland. Two of those specifically are helping me with running the event.

2) Level 2 restrictions around socializing after the shoot. This is a large part of the Big Bore shoot. I would rather wait till we are all able to have a bbq and share a beer, and sit around the woolshed like we have done in the past.

3) Single squad with people from all over the North Island. I know some of the large shooting events are continuing, but they have the luxury of splitting squads into geographic regions. Given the numbers who attend our event, this is not feasible.

For those who have paid upfront (thank you !), I will be in touch to arrange refunds.
