Minute silence tomorrow Fri 25 Jun 10:25 outside your local main police station

1025 friday, outside your local main police station, a minute of silence beginning at 10:27 for fallen police constable Matthew Hunt, 28.

Will be good to see a good turnout of fit and proper people, show the gangs they are a minority, a really small minority!

I went to the minute's silence and stood a respectful distance apart from the Police.

Partly because I didn't want to be photographed and have it used for some kind of PR thing, and more importantly because I haven't served as a Policeman and therefore haven't won the right to stand with them.

I seldom show up to anything official, mainly because I mostly distrust and despise ceremony, tradition, showmanship and all forms of PR.

This, I thought was an exception. A sacrifice worth acknowledgement..

Late last year I got into conversation with an ex soldier who'd been to Afghanistan, and was present at the Battle of Baghak.
He talked about the stress of combat, and likened the period on duty to wearing a shock collar used to train dogs.

There was the continual stress of waiting for the shock of a bullet or explosion, much the same as a dog knows to expect a jolt when wearing the collar.

I imagine that it's a similar story for police at times.

I wish these things for the NZ Police and their support and admin staff:

That they were competently led and managed
    That they were properly resourced
That they were administering competently drafted workable laws
That they were completely and utterly depoliticised
That they were properly held accountable
    That they were properly trained
That they were able to wear a pistol at all times, with the public safe in the knowledge that their training was frequent and beyond reproach.

I wonder if the guy who lost his life might still be with us, if that were the case.

    This.

I have wondered about how well trained he and his colleague was at getting out and using their Glocks, and if they were carrying them at the time.

    Action beats reaction.

IF the idiot got out the car and started shooting immediately it would be too late for the cops even if they were wearing Glocks in their holsters.

I doubt they would have had the pistols on them.

But like most of this thread - it’s all conjecture and guesswork.

From what it sounds like i doubt any extra training would have helped. The piece of shit they were chasing crashed and then set up an ambush. Shot the police in cold blood with a rifle and intented to murder them (allegedly).
So if thats what happened, then how could this be handled differently? You'd need 20/20 hindsight for one thing but say you had that. Its a rifle so his range is huge. 400m in an urban environment. Shit. Send in an APC as cover like with Molinar? Try and get a bead on him with a sharpshooter. But that all takes time and prior knowledge.
Nope if i were looking to find areas to assist police then getting them better intel on offenders would be the more useful thing. Better identify the extremely dangerous criminals and increase spending on the AOS.
