Hi All
I know there's a few knife threads around, some really nice ones out there. For a $50 -$100 to begin with, what's recommended? Is Trademe one below any good/too big? A lot of the ones I see on the forum are not very large?

You don't need a knife that large... Unless your butchering elephants. Get yourself a bahco for less than $20 and learn how to butcher animals then think on spending big money on something nicer or stick with the bahco
The question you haven't answered is what you intend using it for?
By saying you're hunting noob I assume you want to use it for hunting - birds and rabbits or deer and tahr?
Is it intended to be a multi purpose hunting/camping type knife or a single purpose/dedicated knife?
Do you have a preference for stainless or carbon steel? A good carbon steel blade will generally out perform a shitty stainless version on any given Sunday.
As James said, Bahco are good, as are Svord, Mercator etc - lots of options in the sub $50 region to get started with but also consider how you are going to sharpen and maintain them.

Good point, wasn't clear at all. Looking for something for when I do go for a deer/tahr etc hunt.
Saw your website, will upgrade to one of yours if I get into hunting in a big way :) In the meantime, I'll checkout those brands you mentioned. Ta for that. If anyone's bought one recently and found it good let me know. Carbon steel ones do sound way better.

That Mueller would be pretty hopeless as a hunting knife. To big and that aggressive clip point would be a pain to gut with.
Get a bahco if you want to go real cheap. Remember to factor in some sort of sharpening system to your pricing. Doesn't matter how flash a knife is they are useless when blunt, and they all get blunt eventually.
A victory rabbiters knife is a good piece of kit, need to be paired with a steel or strop though as they are fairly soft. Take a mean edge though.
Mercator are an awesome knife. If you like a folder the opinels are good wee knives as well
I bought one of those Muela's not knowing much about knives, and TBH, mine will spend it's life in the workshop, not being taken hunting.
The blade is not a great shape for cutting animals up.
Look for something with a skinnier blade.
Get yourself a svord peasant folder, cheap as chips but has decent carbon steel and heat treatment, then for $10 plus postage I can regrind it to a drop point and make it wickedly sharp to boot.
Will do until you can afford a decent fixed blade.

This is my poor mans swing knife. Couple of mins on the grinder and stone. Be getting little brother to this the next time I see one in a shop.
Buy a Bahco like 223 says, It is actually a really good grade of butchery knife steel that will achieve and hold a razor edge and can be dressed in thirty seconds on a knife 'steel' in the field between deer. Just the right size for 'bum holing' and cutting out the diaphragm They have a handle with flouro orange sections so you won't accidentally cut yourself or loose it in the grass at night. If you have a hankering for something smarter looking, what about making a cool custom sheath out of a piece of leg skin from a deer or a coloured calf for your Bahco. - Sleeve skin the leg then stretch / unroll the skin over the plastic pipe sheath that you prepared earlier and after the 'rawhide' has dried, a sheath to make a Cheyenne jealous.Quote:

@Moa Hunter is onto it, I have a dazzling array of good knifes at home but take my old rusty Mercator every time (I bought it 30 years ago before Bahco were thought of). Get any of the knifes recommended above, learn how to keep it sharp and buy something nice when you know what you want. I couldn’t stand useing my hunting buddies knife and he wouldn’t dream of using mine, so our personal recommendations may not suit you.
