Thread: Austrian Army Grey Gore-Tex Jacket

Has anybody ever used something similar to this for hunting/outdoors? I'm on a budget and in no way can afford the super expensive gore-tex jackets. It would mostly be used for goat and fallow hunting; nothing too hard out..... At $99 it maybe a good option.....

It'll be fine. I have a few items of surplus and they do the job. I recently walked right up to a deer wearing a Goretex jacket. It was pissing it down, so noise wasn't an issue it seemed. If you shop around, you might be able to get a brand new surplus jacket at the same or similar price.

Didn't know Deer wore goretex.

Yeah man, they will be sweet. If you can check out the individual jacket you will be buying check around the seams and taping.

Nothing wrong with a regular outdoor store jacket either. Check sales, trademe, massdrop etc.

I have a couple of flash harry hunting jackets but the one that gets carried the most is a little marmot precip. Waterproof and light

Probably beat up some greenie for it. Deer don't like getting wet any more than we do.

I use the German Flecktarn - be sim to this I imagine - good value and find it breaths better than alot of the expensive stuff out there today

Ive got the English equivalent and rate it. Except the hood is huge, maybe to accomadate a soldier wearing a helmet.

I tried one if these on (surplus store on Cuba St, Wellington) and they are bloody well made. I couldn't test the waterproof properties though. That worried me a bit, as the jacket looked quite well worn, and I decided not to get one after all. If it had been unissued, I would have bought it.

As Swazi and other goretex garment manufacturers say they WANT you to launder the jacket occasionally, and apply (spray) on their recommended product whilst the garment is still wet. I’ve done this to a couple of H&H type jackets and I reckon they’re better than they were new ...

Yes the sealant spray is $25 or whatever - but you’re applying it regardless of the price you first paid. Seems to me you’re onto a winner!

Why not check out Macpac when they have a sale on (99% of the time) They have genuine goretex jackets. If it's for the hunting you say, they'll be fine. Another good option is the Milair NZ military ones. Pre katmandu days. I've still got one and it's the best rain coat I've ever owned. Bloody good zip pockets in front and awesome wire lined hood, draw strings etc.

I picked up my Goretex jacket from Kathmandu in one of their end of season sales. It's a pleasing "military" green in colour and was about $250. They have a sale on now, so worth a look.

I second this , I’ve had one for a few months and I agree about the breathing qualities .
My son has actually grabbed it to take to Europe this month on a 3 week hiking trip .
