Bumbag suggestions

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a bumbag as an upgrade to the huge tussock bag ( Matuku bag from H&F )that I currently have.
I am ideally looking for a pack that:

• Has handy pockets – and lots of them – so I can grab more ammo, gps etc etc easily
• Is expandable to carry meat/rabbits as needed – or can be combined with a pikau or something like the Swazi stag bag - Stag Bag - SWAZI.
• Is durable and quiet

Ones I have looked at are:

• Badlands Monster - Badlands Monster
• Stoney Creek 7 Pocket (is it still made?) Deadeye Dicks - Stoney Creek
• Hunters Element Saddle Pack Saddle Pack


Are there any others out there that are decent and will suit those needs?

A mate just grabbed one of these and is very happy with it so far.

Trouble with bum bags is they end up sliding off your waist and/or pull your pants down.
You can use suspenders to hold them up, or do what I did and sew some clips onto the bum bag and onto my hydro bladder. Used a small bit of strapping from 1 of the kids old school bags. Clips cost less than a dollar each.
Most expensive bit was getting the Mrs to sew the clips on for me.

would be interested to see what these Sitka ones are like

You mean apart from being expensive :(

I have a Ridgeline one. First one a couple of the zips fell apart the first time I used it. They replaced it with no hassles, the second one lasted a bit longer but one of the zips has fallen apart too. Don't buy a ridgeline one unless you like fixing zips and crappy half-assed stitching.

I like my monster. Shoulder Straps good. Never had a sweaty back since i started using it. Not cheap, but they guarantee and mine well made. Holds 18 litres, and straps galore.

twin needle is making a hunting belt worth a look well made gear

I have the badlands monster - great with the shoulder harness - carries heaps

I use it as my day walk around

I've tried looking for them on the 'net - is there a link to the belt at all?

I've got the Stoney Creek one that expands out to be a pack and I like it - just dip the zip slider tags in epoxy/araldite so that they don't rattle

I take it out everytime I go hunting

Just looked at the video for the Big Bear - it is very modular - looks really quite good. The only thing that it seems to be really missing is better pockets on the belt itself.

A great item though, and half the price of the Monster...

Just found Tenzing packs I see now that there is a whole lot more choice than I thought there was!

Bumbags suck on hot days. Pretty much cook your kidneys and cut circulation off to your legs. Wear a belt with knife, camera bag and maybe a small pouch with "handy" stuff in it, and then get your self a decent daypack with a lightweight frame and throw your other crap in it. At least with a daypack you have room for a decent lunch, a jacket and other stuff. Then you can bone out the animal you've shot and carry it out in comfort.

I have the twin needle one.While it is mil spec and bomb proof it does come at a price it would probably be the most expensive one $300-400 depending on what options you choose.You could safely abseil of the belt that is supplied if needed.

Just an update - Thanks for all the info provided!

I've gone for a Badlands Monster - got it for US$99 - Score!
I am got this bino case as well. Hope to get that added to the Monster with clips, in the same way that the Alpz Big Bear connects. Might contact the guys in christchurch about that ;)

Does the monster sit low enough that you can put a backpack over the top? like military spec webbing?

You probably could, though I prefer to keep mine on my waist, not down onto my hips

And good score re price, I paid retail ($250) for mine....

After searching for different day packs I could use, I thought I'd give this a go ..... $59.95 from your local motorcycle shop. It's a Scott (pit lane) Bum bag.
Seems to fit everything I want. For water just a 1L canteen on the belt or a 2L Bladder pack or none, Depending on how long I hunt for and where I hunt and how many creek's/rivers around. And also have a small pack to try (fits extra food and clothes in if need be). All trial and error until I find something I like though.

We have limited stock of these belts in this colour for $170 as you see it, Large pouch, GPS and Radio Holder and everything is interchangeable. All mil spec, 1000D Cordura with H/D YKK zipping. Normally $200 but a few old styles left over we are clearing as we now have all colour/pattern matching webbing and trims.

Nice bit of kit twinneedle. Only comment i have is i do not see much room left over on it for my knife sheath, ammo pouch or range finder...

Just eat a few more pies and make the belt longer ;)

That's the beauty of these belts, you can chop and change pouch size, add and remove. It has splits in the webbing platform for your knife sheath, the pouches have internal ammo holders. We have thought of all these things so don't worry you can fit it all in!
