They're good but the explorer editions aren't worth the extra over the se editions (both garmin and delorme) as the maps on them are shit
The mapping is provided by delorne on all these and it is rubbish. If you are expecting normal garmin mapping you will be disapointed
Thanks just looking at a PLB but the Garmin in reach seems like a better option the basic plan dosent seem to bad price wise :)

My dad has just been given an Explorer edition to try by SPOT NZ as he works outdoors in the back country alone most the time and even they told him not to expect much from the maps, but new software is being developed to allow them to run a better map.Quote:

Keen on one of these for the upcoming winter, cheapest place I found was a pilot shop..... Haven't bitten the bullet yet but don't need the mapping system as already have a gps, but it would replace the plb / allow my plb to be leant to hunting partner that doesn't have one
I have a plb and a gps (garmin rhino) already and have been thinking about getting a sat. phone. This might be a good option.
To be honest I don't think much of the map on the garmin gps at this point anyway.
