Gear list for north island day hunts

    Hi All,

I am trying to get together enough gear to head out for day hunts in the north Island, so far I have

    Warm top
    Merino base layer
    Jacket
    Rain coat
    Backpack
    Cap
    Knife

    I still need to get

    Pants
    boots
    Good socks
    Compass

What else will be needed for a day hunt? I am on a bit of a budget with a little one on the way so I am just trying to get a good base setup I can slowly build on.

    Cheers

Map in plastic bag or laminated, head torch, small first aid kit. Probably don't need a jacket if you are carrying a rain coat.

not including what you are standing up in and your day pack ( should be 40 litres approx, with no zips opening main compartment - get a hooded flap type pack)

    first aid kit
    survival blanket
    compass/map/gps
    PLB
Outer layer - jacket or windproof outer, hat, gloves and beanie
    meat bag and knife/sharpener
    food +water
headlamp + batteries, plus backup torch

and look at the weather forecast!!!!

The truth about all of the posts above is that you're not likely to need a third to half of the gear listed on a good day in the boonies.

    BUT

If you've slipped and fractured your wrist, night is an hour away, it's raining and you can't remember the way back, whatever you're carrying is now your life support system.

Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

Don't be bogged down with what you 'could' take (as there is an ever increasing influx of new gear on the market - 'nice to haves') and focus on what you're trying to do: kill a deer over the course of a single day, and take it home, with the small chance of having to spend a night in the bush if things don't go well/or to call for help.

You need a way to kill/butcher the animal; a way of regulating your body temperature; and contingency gear - shelter/communications if things go pear shaped.

1 = Rifle, ammo, & knife - with an old pillow case to stuff the meat in (if you're boning it out in the field) and a pack to carry it out with,

2= Rain poncho, fleece & light woolen singlet if it gets cold/wet.

    3) A lighter and a piece of bike tyre inner tube (to start fire during unexpected night out). A PLB beacon (in case you were to get injured and need to call for help).

The reason I'd go for a poncho over a rain jacket for a single day hunt, is because they're generally lighter, and in the even that you had to spend a night in the bush, the poncho can double as a fly. That way one item can perform two tasks - whereas the rain jacket can't.

Day hunts are all about quick and light.

As for food - 2-3 snickers bars is all you'll need for a day. Don't mess around with cookers, gas, water purification straws etc.

How ya doing @Frodo hope your well.
I’d stick with your purification straws. Nothing worse than catching the unseen
I know your in Southland. But some of those streams up North aren’t as clean as yours down south
