    Generators ...

    Hi There ..

We're on the lookout for a Generator to keep things running in the event of a shake.

Preferably a small one that we can also use around the farm for powertools, etc ...

Anyone got experience / advice good / bad / avoid like the plague ..

    Ta

My dad builds mini hydros, he should have a fair idea of it, I'll ask him about it for you.

I have a Chinese made diesel 6 kva...will run most things. Keep in mind that you will need fuel storage of a quantity to get you through a natural disaster as the fuel outlets wont be able to pump.

Eion...what sort of mini hydro's does your dad build?

Im currently using a borrowed genny a cheep one it's shit . When my funds allow I'm getting a petrol inverter type . Honda are the best I'm told . But you do pay . Just remember you can't use non inverter types on computers and devices with chips in them I'm told . Inverter or sin wave types seem double the price .

Munsey, Kiwi check Kipor and let me know, their inverter gen sets are a good price, just becareful if you run powertools etc on an inverter you have to hook to the fast mode on the engine, not eco. Munsey I still think hondas are the best

Honda for petrol, Yanmar for diesel, some people swear by Robin (Subaru) but I've never had much luck with them myself

Don't settle for anything in the 2kva range or less, it won't drive your water pump, and maybe not even fridge and freezer. Keep your extension leads short to reduce voltage drop. You need one up around 3kva to get pumps running.

We have a coupe generators on farm from Cow Power Generators. I think they bring in cheap Chinese gennies and re wire them with a few better components. They get used sparaticly and dont get looked after very well but start every time you turn the key. I took one to chch the day after the quake and it ran my auntys freezer and charged phones, her friends were jealous.

Im looking at getting one for the same reason but im getting a petrol inverter gennie they are lighter and quieter
