GPS units
my old garmin etrex has finally navigated its way to the paths in the sky.
whats good? I've been using the nz topo50 app on my phone with the hunting area overlay but I really don't like not having a backup in case I drop it or something.
I would prefer something with no touchscreen if possible.

I upgraded to a garmin with built in map...but like you,use the topo50 more now..the gps is still in pack for backup and its good to get it out and check if my dead reckoning on paper map is close or not.

Any of the Garmin 64 or 62 series handheld units are robust enough and don't have touch screen.
Cheap enough at 200 bucksish, now obsolete but can still upload and download points and tracks if necessary.
Make absolutely certain has map sd card in already, they have gone up in value lately.
Units pop up for sale on here from time to time. check trade me.

It's worth noting you can just download the maps for Garmin from topomap.co.nz. So long as you can copy and paste files on a computer I wouldn't pay for the maps separately (few hundred $ I think).

I use my topo50 ($4,99 per island) and have a Garmin INREACH backup. This is the (almost) ultimate safety. backup GPS with Satellite emergency cover. The subscriptions are very affordable and you can turn the payments on and off depending on your hunt.
