Anyone use them? They don't seem very popular. Not for gutting, but seem to make light work of skinning an animal.

I’ve used one. But prefer the old drop point. You still need to make a small incision to get the hook going.
Also I found the hook needs to be big enough to take your steel so that you can keep an edge on it.
not a gut hook, but same idea - OutDoor Edge Swingblade. Love mine - a really great knife and not one to break the bank.

if somehow I lost the first two fingers of left hand I could see it being usefull........been gutting without a fancy hook for 40ish years so cant see the need of another knife just to do one task that is already covered.
I bought one years ago when they were in fashion, found I cut myself with the blade and went back to a Mercator. Still got it somewhere if I find it you can have it.
@MB I’ll have a look tonight.
Awesome, that's great! Would be good just to try it. More than happy to pay postage.
i have a buck "zipper" fixed blade, love it !
Been using one for ages. Just got used to it I spose.
When doing venison, speed and cleanliness was important. I found I was faster and cleaner using one, once I had a system. I use it alot for head skinning as well as I can get nice lines with it.
It is definitely not a race when hunting for the freezer but watching people fuck around for ages with poor knife work which should only take 2-3 mins max, frustrates the hell out of me.

Wot he said.
I was given a Buck knife for my birthday years ago and wasn't too sure how it would go but once you get used to it, it's fine. I like it for running down the guts and up the legs. I use it more than my Sword knife these days, mainly because it's smaller, lighter and easier to carry around.
There are many ways to skin a cat.
and it was originally designed to lift the billy off the fire and then some dick sharpened it
I always thought it was an Eskimo or first nations thing intended for skinning not gutting but eventually evolved to that. Seen things for sale in North America that just have the hook and no other blade.
Surely only millenials would worry using a knife for the billy.... Plenty of sticks around one would think [emoji16]

My only question about these guthook knives is how does it go when your cutting around the bum when gutting ? Does the hook get caght up ? I have no intention of buying one just something I've always wondered.
Would be a pita if you had to carry a second knife just for bumhole removal
Beauty of having deer on your doorstep I spose. I leave the ass in while carrying to stop some blood.
Hock and clean it up when I get home with another knife.
My gut hook is a wee gerber folding.
Wouldn't have the length to do the ass end the way I do it anyway.

Was taught about leaving the poo tube in some time ago. Great way to keep your arse clean.
If using a gut hook found a Mercator or similar was needed for around the bum
Found it, Pm me your address and I’ll get it on it’s way ;)

Here's me thinking they were for cutting seat belts...
Just a question, does anyone use those push dagger like skinning knives? Or are they banned like they are in the UK?

Cheers. I’ll report back to the forum on how it goes. Need to shoot something first though, so don’t hold your breath! [emoji3]
I bought one for doing a few homekill sheep, but found that with the depth of the hook ( about 10mm on my one) I could still cut the guts with the point of the hook as I went toward the brisket. Went back to a skinning knife and the split finger method
I now go the other way brisket up.
Find it works for me.
Noticed that is the way guys I know do their pigs.
Dairy farmers that can do pigs without a problem but haven't a clue on sheep.
Do not use fingers just "delicate" with the knife.
Funny how you can change from what the old man taught us 40+ years ago.
I have one of these someone gave me years ago. As others have said I only really use it for skinning, works o.k for quickly unzipping hide though.
Mostly use gutless method but if gutting reckon the two fingers trick beats this hands down.

So, tried it and worked like a dream. Unzipped the skin on an animal in one movement. I’ve decided to buy a smaller gut hook knife as my main hunting knife.
The knife that Shootm kindly sent me is now surplus. You can either have it back, or I’ll pass it on to the next forum member. First dibs Shootm, after that first come, first served.
Got given a Schrade Old Timer good knife but found the hook a pain in the arse so ground it off, caught on to much
Hello from Parua Bay :)
Anyone ever bothered with an Ulu for skinning?
Probably only makes sense if you are hanging whole and don't need to carry it.
I have a cheapo one with a modified edge for scraping prior to tanning and it seems to do the trick.
Pretty amazing to watch Inuit hunters skinning with though.
Ulu is like this for reference Attachment 111364
