    Hole repair, down jacket

Caught my macpac on a nail, it's a really silky outer fabric and electrical tape isn't holding. Thinking maybe trying a bike tyre patch, any thoughts?

Wouldn't care too much but one, its obviously an issue with waterproofing, two every time I sit down it looks like a duck just went backwards through a jet engine with all the fluff around.

Tahr is on the money, except the hexagonal patches they sell wont curl up like the tape does. Done many patches with this on Macpac and other down jackets.

Have repaired plenty of tears in down jackets and sleeping bags. The tape as above is good, but some dont like seeing the tape on the outside, and if it doesnt stick perfectly it can come away around the edges. The way I prefer to do it is lay the ripped area on a flat surface and use the blunt end of a pencil inserted in to the tear and carefully push the down fill away from the tear, to allow the area to be held flat. I use a couple of books on the garment to hold it flat while doing the repair. Then get a small piece of masking tape and slip it in to the inside of the tear, out of sight. Keep it all flat and stick the 2 edges of the tear together on top of the tape. Then mask off the tear on the outside about 6-10mm out from the tear. Then apply Aquaseal or Stormsure to the fabric in the masked off area, let is settle a for 20 or so minutes, then use a matchstick to tidy it up around the masking tape and remove any bubbles etc. After it has "gone off" a bit but still a tad tacky, carefully remove the masking tape off the outside. Leave it over night, job done.

I used a band aid to do a temporary repair on a down jacket I burnt a hole in about 10 years ago. It's still there.

Tenacious tape is awesome , got mine at Macpac, cut the patch into a circle that way no corners to potentially peel up

Best stuff I've come across, sail repair tape. They also use it to put numbers/letters on sails - used some to fix a hole in my Thermarest temporarily, lasted over ten years, until the thermarest delaminated!

I've used it to fix tents, sleeping bags, raincoats, down jackets....

Or you can go into the shop and get whatever size/colour you want cut off the big rolls they have in their sail loft upstairs...

even used it in several shoes to reinforce the heel cup, as I have a habit of wearing out the lining on the inside of my shoes...

I just sew up the holes with cotton thread and drop a little super glue on the thread. Depending on the colour you can't really even see it.

This was a tear about an inch long so it's a bit ugly but if it is only small it can be a lot less noticeable

In the mountains duct tape from the trekking pole. Carry small Tear Aid patches - do well. Back at home, stitch it up.
