Thread: How much firewood for Fly in trip

Have a Tahr Ballot block this weekend and a MIA tent courtesy of North Canterbury NZDA (FYI if you are NZDA you can hire this out). Haven't used the tent stove, and the block does not have firewood.

How much are people bringing in per day/week (7 nights)? How are you transporting it? Has anyone tried briquettes?

Any tips or tricks? Things to watch out for.

Has anyone tried coal in there one? No go?

I use 20 litter buckets which double as ok seats
My hot tent stove is a lot smaller that your one will be and I use 10 litres per night

All pre split in a range of sizes for fast or slow burn
I usually get to camp after dark
Fire up the stove to cook, heat and dry things out then go to bed and let the fire die
Light it for 30 minutes in the morning to get going then out the door when it's still dark

20 L buckets with the lids on properly are good for filling gaps in the heli pods

Also a good size for head skins on the flight out

I don't think these fires will handle coal they glow red hot with wood.

Has anyone used coal in their MIA as a supplementary feed?

A small bag of BBQ briquettes might be useful also

I dropped a couple in my tiny Titanium stove on the trip last month and it was still warm on the bottom 8 hours later

But I would only use them very sparingly

Next trip I'm going to add a foam layer to the bucket lids from an old foam sleeping matt
Glue it inside the rebate
Reckon they will be more comfortable seats and are just the right height

Anything on a fly in that has multiple uses is always good

Which is why we used a heavy cardboard box when empty you can burn and more room in the chopper and they stack better in the chopper.

Have used coal in one, works a treat. Bit of wood to get it going and then onto coal, it does get pretty glowing red but didn’t seem any worse than what you’d get with the wood. Saves a lot of space in the Heli.

I use roughly two 40kg seed sacks full of split macro for a week .
Take an axe and split smaller on arrival .
Youl find that you won’t need the fire burning overnight as they heat the tent very quickly and efficiently, so only need to be lit upon arrival back to tent at end of day and first thing in the morning to get ready to head out .
Usualy when setting tent up I’ll place all the spare firewood around the base of the tent if there is not enough rocks .

Also sacks can be used for headskins or meat on the way out . Plus depending on chimney type don’t burn any paper or cardboard if the chimney has a small grate like top as it will block up and cause smoke to come back down chimney and fill the tent
