Yes @Tahr you are right, that Antelopey thing was shot on a tourist pathway and what's more, is that he was himself actually a zoo escape. Even our 'Great Walk' tracks are steeper than your hunting country.
In fact the only place that I have seen such easy country as yours, has been at night while I've been asleep - When I look at that photo of yours I find myself humming 'The Big Rock Candy Mountain' That second photo looks like it could have been taken in the ChCh Botanical Gardens
That's the problem having a friendly battle of words with a 71 year old. Sooner or later you know they can play the age trump card if needed and the rest of us mere mortals can do nothing more in reply than scuttle back to our burrows. Have a good trip down south Tahr :)
Its a legitimate and worthy strategy if used infrequently and appropriately. Or when under attack :) And one that only a few can use.
@Moa Hunter is welcome to join me on the Tahr if he thinks he can keep up. :)
Tried a belt, once. was a bloody pain in the ass, I like to be able to drop my pack and have no shit sticking off the side of me so I can bush bash without getting hung up or collecting a tonne of gorse etc on a belt with pouches and shit sticking out all over the show. I just run a twin needle bino biv with my Rangefinder and a few rounds in a seperate twin needle pouch and my knife also on my biv, small spare knife tucked in the side pocket and PLB on a neck lanyard and tucked inside my shirt
The big one got away.... hence my enthusiasm to return next month

In the biv I have small med kit, a mercator, about 3m of paracord, rangecard in case I lose my phone (usually slide it in the biv also anyhow) and a lighter. Velcro ammunition holder on the front (you can just remove it if wanted) and one inside rangefinder pouch also. Rangefinder pouch running on one of the bino biv straps so it's the only thing that "sticks out" but I can just slide it round the back if it's being a pain in the ass anyhow, never found it to be a problem though. That's all I need for a trip away from my pack.

That is a cleverly thought out system right there, but for me it would do my head in having that much stuff hanging out the front of me. I really like that we are all different and looking at neat ideas people have to suit their own preferences and hunting style. Very cool. The readers of this salubrious web site should also bear it in mind that Mr Songhurst is from the South Island and as such when he refers to 'bush bashing' he is meaning that the large straight sided beech trees are growing closer together than 20 metres. ;)
I will be sure to bring a pocketful of matagouri seeds with me just for you @Hiawatha if I find myself hunting the gently rolling hills of the north island one day
Ha ha ha. I was hoping that would get a rise. Actually I am from the mighty south so am fairly well qualified to comment. The intrinsic law is that no matter where a hunter goes, they will always manage to find the most insufferable piece of crap on that block to wade through. For me there is nothing worse in the south than matagouri intertwined with briar rose vines. Matagouri on its own is but a gentle caress. Up here it is blackberry. And in both islands when you are trying to make the tops for an evening hunt there is always 3km of leatherwood. I would make the comment though that many mainlanders come north to hunt sika where there is nothing to wade through, and then wonder what all the fuss is about. Man we could start a whole new thread on this.
Here's my belt kit with all of the usual stuff in it. The game gear bags are great and are rainproof, just not submersible proof.Attachment 122661
