    Leupold or Zeiss 3-9 scope?

    Hi all

I'm after a bit of advice.

The free tasco scope we got for the lad's grendel is working, but has partially stripped threads on the ocular bell, so it loosens off if bumped. It's ok for now, but eventually either the threads will let go, or it'll fog up, and Murphy dictates that it will happen at the worst possible moment.

I've got an option of either a basic (vx1? or similar) Leupold, or a Zeiss conquest both in 3-9. The Zeiss is a bit more expensive, and obviously will give better low light performance, but how do the two compare to each other in terms of durability and warranty support?

    Cheers.

My contrast experience: sent directly to the USA factory, Leupold 3-9x40 VXIII lens cleaning damage. Leupold replaced with 3-9x40 Freedom, no charge. Zeiss 2.5-10x50 sent directly to German factory, for change of reticle. Zeiss required significant processes and and cost a small fortune. Sending scopes to both the USA and Germany are now both difficult due to new USA restrictions on trade and no postal agreement with Germany. However, the process with the Leupold factory took about 3 weeks (longer due to a staff member being on holiday) and the process with the Zeiss factory took about 6 months and was laborious. The Conquest scope is a Zeiss/USA scope rather than a German one so things are different: I sent a Conquest to the Zeiss/USA factory and it was refused and went into the black hole of lost postal items. Any Zeiss/USA scopes must be sent by the agent in NZ. So, that leaves you at the mercy of the NZ agent. My experience of NZ agents for hunting gear has not been good, generally. Overall, my older eyes prefer the sight image of the Conquest but eyes up to the age of about 40 years will find no problem with the Leupold VXI, and the service from Leupold is the best.

Id go the VX1 over the Zeiss, I had a think about it and I've got a Vari-XII, VX1, VX2, VX-HOG and VX3HD and all have very forgiving eyeboxes making it easy fof new shooters to find their target.
They're light, have reasonable light gathering and the lifetime warranty

Another one for Leupold, used Zeiss Conquest in a number of rifles a few years back, several went back with issues, and the time delay was horrendous. So we binned 'em and changed optic's supplier.

I would look at Burris too is I was buying from a shop, but a local forum member has some scopes he will part with, which is a win/win for us both.

Looks like Loopy is the way.

Bugger. I always electrical tape that part on scopes with that type of adjustment so I didn't know it was having issues.

Would take a Burris over the Leupold though.

Hey, it's doing it's job, the lad has shot 3 goats with it so far.

Interesting you prefer Burris. Would you go Burris DropTine 3-9x40 ($440ish new) over the vx1?

leupold all day long.... its taken me the best part of thirty years to put them on all(nearly all) of my rifles...thus far I have had only one issue....sent back and fixed under warrenty and that scope is much older than thirty years and the issue was there when I got it multiple hands old..sticky turret.
I have killed 11 scopes over the years, but havent killed a leupold.... that says it all really.

I've only killed two scopes over the years and both were Leupold. Neither were dropped or anything untoward. I've had Nikko Stirling cheapos that handled more.

For the money the Burris wins for me. I'd personally go up a bit to the new fullfield over the droptine though.

Actually, thinking about it 3 from 3 Leupold failed for me. Would never buy another
