For comparison, you really need to look thru 2 different brands of scopes at the same time to see the difference,
I used to run leupolds on about 4 rifles, until one day i had a zeiss to look thru, Comparing with my VX 6 it was a game changer,
The clarity with European glass is next level, No longer have any luppy,s on my rifles,

    What level Zeiss?
Because a VX6 is a very different level of scope to what is been asked about here, I came imagine a base model Zeiss bests the VX6.

Recently I looked thtough a mates Zeiss Conquest 4-16x44 in very dim dawn light and couldn't positively identify the deer through it at 8x.
Switched to my VX-3HD 2.5-8X36 and it was a little better, felt a little brighter and clearer and allowed me to take the shot.

Realistically at the level Vanman is asking about, the base model Zeiss, Leupold and Burris been discussed will all be a big improvement over what they're currently using.

@Vanman. Have you had a chance to have a look through either of these scopes you have been offered? This could make up your mind for you.
I have a 3-9x Conquest and optically it leaves the lower end Leupolds for dead and is easily on par with my VX5 HD. As for reliability, I can't really comment. I have owned 4 Leupolds and 2 Zeiss scopes and not had problems with any of them. If it were me, and I could get a Zeiss Conquest for near the price of a VX1, it would be an easy decision in favor of the Zeiss.

What i said, Was for the op to compare the scopes that he is thinking of buying, outside and beside each other at the same time as what is recommended by 1 person on here probably won't suit another person,
And i gave an example of what i had experienced, when comparing 2 scopes that i had in the safe, the zeiss was about 2/3rds of the price of the VX6 at the time.
It's got nothing to do with Brand, it has to do with what you can afford, and if there are 2-3 different brands in that price range then it is better to compare them at the same time and outside if you can as looking across a shop floor trying to compare them will give you diddly squat.

I can compare the Zeiss and Loopy side by side (they are both old models), but not a Burris equivalent. There is someone in Nelson selling a Fullfield 2 but I wouldn't be able to compare it to the other two.

I'm leaning towards the vx1 or a Fullfield 2 for the lad. Durability is going to be the biggest factor at this stage.

I’ve slowly swapped most of my Leopoldstadt out for swaro 3-9 ,better low light performance in my opinion, except fo4 my 1-4 bush gun scope which is Leupold.

A swaro might be a bit much for a 13 yr old!

right...so a 13 year old and your shooting at under 150 yards (mostly) .....find a m8 4x or similar fixed four power leupold.....and be happy. it wont change zero, less parts to go wrong,no chance of fluffing a short range quick shot by having scope zoomed up to highest power setting. young eyes will cope with less magnification very well yet still have enough magnification for precise placement should it be needed... everyone has spoken about clarity and light gathering BUT.....if your up close n personal eg under fifty yards or game is moving FIELD OF VIEW is far far more important than anything else.I have two wonderfully clear scopes both are fixed 6x.....they have both done a turn on centrefire but been swapped out as soon as I had option with lower magnification for up close. one is a leupold (now on 22lr) and the other is a kahles..sitting in drawer.... the best way I have found to compare field of view is to count viewable fence palings at 25ish yards....

    Same, Buy once, Cry once.
Get the young fella a 3x9 scope, more versatile, 3x in bush, 9x on bigger clearings, tops etc and even in the bush you can wind the power up to 9x just to double check what you are looking at is in fact what you think it is.

Now that is truly scary, getting ready to shoot and you don't know what it is you are pointing the rifle at (I think it contradicts one of the main rules for having a firearms licence):
'you can wind the power up to 9x just to double check what you are looking at is in fact what you think it is.'
