Thread: Lightweight sleeping quilt

Looking at getting a new sleeping bag that is light weight for longer trips and was reading a few articles when someone mentioned these quilts. Hadn't heard of them before this so I was wondering if anyone has experience with them and if so, what your thoughts on them were.

I've got 2. A Burrow 20 from Hammock gear, and a Jacks r better 15 degree. Love them both. The burrow is like 600 grams and has kept me toasty down to about -3 so far, while my buddy was freezing in a bag that weighs twice as much.
There is a learning curve to them in regards to managing drafts, but I have not found this an issue at all even in the colder temps. WOuld be happy to about -5 in it which is pretty true to its rating.
I could combine both quilts and be crazy warm in about any temps and would still be lighter than the 32 degree synthetic bag it replaced.

Did you have to upgrade your mat aka x-therm etc? cheers.

Have a look at Enlightened Equipment they have a good selection

-5 should be perfect so I may opt for that choice. Thanks for the replies

I use either a exped winterlite (awesome piece of kit) or an exped simlite (which is what I used before) The -3 night was up the top of the Umakarikari summit, and that was on the simlite, which I think has an r value of around 3 give or take. I haven't noticed an appreciable difference in them from the bag to the quilt. I reckon if you have a pad that is suitable for your temps youll be sweet. That squished down ain't doing shit anyway

More hassle than a regular bag but very light. I added a primaloft overbag for winter use and it's a very good setup.

@K95 What do you use for an overbag?

hmmm have thought about a quilt more for space saving than weight. not much cheaper than a regular bag though

I do also use a silk liner with the setup. I reackon it adds a couple degrees plus helps keep the kit a little tidier

big agnes primaloft- kings canyon or something like that.

I've been using a Thermarest Auriga quilt for a few nights. Very good loft, packs down a small. Takes a little getting used to. As others have said, manage drafts and use liners to boost warmth to get the best out of them.

Where abouts did you pick up your thermarest auriga from?
