Isnt the Leupold one just the base model Alaska guide creations one?
I had one and the lid opened up towards your chest not away from you and it was garbage. I see they have changed it on the new models
When did they bring these out? Wonder if they’re any good?

@McNotty they had a deal at the sika show this year on the 45l combo. it was a good deal what i remember. might of been $100 0ff.
staff were busy and i was meant to get back to ask some question about it I was very interested and yeah well slip my mind and i missed out
But interested in feed back if any ones running one
I reckon the states has the advantage of 10 million hunters buying new packs every year so that can keep developing and MARKETING the latest and greatest.
1. Kifaru
2. Exo
3. Mystery Ranch
4. KUIU
All top quality and game changers. Bottom 3 trying to gain the same reputation as Kifaru.
Why have kiwis not been running these packs since the early 2000s…because you’re all tough as nails compared to the rest of the world!!!
IMHO nothin beats taking a pack frame back for the last 3 trips!!

Looking at the size of that elk’s head relative to your back and assuming you’re not 5’6”, that is a big animal and great set of antlers.
Having hauled out moose, I understand the weight difference between reds, fallow and elk/moose.
NA game regs requiring bring out the whole animal have incentivised pack development for these applications.

That elk is in Nelson Hunting and Fishing. A moose makes an elk seem like a yearling goat. Almost threw my back out just thinking about a MOOSE!!
So, any feedback from users of these ‘modern packs’ on their waterproofness? As an old bugger the notion of your pack opening anywhere other than the top is hard to reconcile. Can’t stop looking at those long front and side zips …
I don't tend to hunt in the rain if I can help it but my Mystery Ranch has stood up to some good showers while hiking.
I've got a pack cover for if I get caught in some real snotty stuff but I honestly haven't felt the need to use it yet as the zips haven't let any moisture in that I could see
I always use a pack liner and the Spika I'm currently using has a built in rain cover, however it doesn't work if you have the rifle strapped to the pack.

What binocs are you using there @Tahr.
I don't know how modern it is but my Fjallraven Kajka suits me well. It's made from very tough ViNylon -F "micro canvas" for want of a better word
It's not "light" but it's got heaps of space, two very generous side pockets and the top of the pack can detach to be a chest bag or bumbag. You can load it from the top or unzip the whole back of the main compartment
Heaps of straps so great for stashing the rifle and most importantly for me (long legs, short back), it's VERY adjustable for width across shoulders and height. Last time I used it on a two dayer over "challenging" terrain it carried the weight well and on the way out it would of been over 30kg....which my legs complained about but back and shoulders were good.

They were 7x35 and Japanese. Haminex. That was 1970. Same as these, but smaller.

Used to borrow bino's for trip's to Rangi and give the owners venison.
Never dreamed I could own a pair.
First blooded outing for the Exo K4 3600. I’m still salty I didn’t get the 5000 bag, but the load carrying was sooo bloody comfortable. Pack weight was close to 40kg and I was hardly sore the next day.
I’m still on the fence about the large full length side pockets, I’m used to one main compartment and also having the protection of a pack liner for all my gear against poor weather. I don’t use a spotting scope and am seriously considering cutting out the internal wall on one side to make the main compartment larger and keeping the other in intact for tent or bivvy gear.
To the people that have them, what are you chucking in the large side pockets?
I've got the 5000, I put my tent in one side and have the other side for my wet weather gear, I was also slightly apprehensive about the side pockets but actually am finding them pretty useful. I have been putting a dry bag in the main compartment and that seems to work well, Only had the pack for about a month so I'm sure I'll tweak how I use it. Overall it's super comfy, endless adjustment so the fit is spot on and I like how I can compress everything down when I'm just going for the day.
My Kuiu Pro LT 7000 pack in Fiordland. Love this pack, so comfortable to have on your back all day and really enjoy the layout and options I have with pockets etc. My mates Pro 7800 bag is even better again, it just comes with slightly more weight.
Yeah ashtrays in the seat armrests and white covers on the seat backs for the brillcream.
Same as BK10. Wet weather gear and tent/fly. That way, if anything is slightly wet it drips down away from everything else.
On tramping hikes, the takedown rifle fits in both sides completely hidden away.
I wonder if you cut one side open if it would unbalance the pack? If the other side wasn't weighed up with something else.
I'm doing the same as @BK10. My Kuiu Mountain Star fits perfectly in one side pouch. I have a tripod in the other but it's maybe better used for a larger item. I have quick access items in the middle pocket like snacks and my kill kit. I to may buy the 5000 but only to carry more. I packed out my first deer today and it was good. I don't think the meat shelf is designed for little game like Sika. I had it all in game bags but it still tried squirming out the sides. I did get a crib panel I think I might need to use in future for Sika. Sorry. Forgot to take a photo
Hey man ive used mine quite a few times.
Tent in one side fits with some extra room.
Tripod if im taking the spotter goes in the other and can fit a full 3L bladder for camp water in the other.
I found folding my sleeping pad and placing it in the bottom of the pack saves a bit of space too then sleeping bad and clothes in a dry bag on top, food and jetboil.
I have the drink bottle holder and one front pouch is bloody handy.
I also have a few of there white organizer bags that you can clip into different spots and these work awesome

Note mine too is the 3600 but i have the idea of getting a 5000 at some point. I can do 3 days with some room to add more but the pack gets quite wide and its a bit of a pain in the creeks.
Meat shelf is designed for meat on the bone, when i used mine i ended up using 2 sticks in the dry bag to help keep it vertical but normally just carry it in my pack as normal.
I am thinking there must be a better way to use the meat shelf with boned out meat.
I bought the Crib. I think this would help with smaller or less supported loads. https://exomtngear.com/collections/k...rib-load-panel
This is the load harness/crib on the Initial Ascent. It has a sleeve pouch on the outside for a bit storage. With the bag off and the lid on and with the crib it makes an excellent day pack ready for load carrying. It's one of the reasons I went for the IA.

NB: I robbed that camo rifle carrier off another pack.
