Thread: Newbie hunter. Which backpack?? Size?? Brand?? Other gear?

i wouldnt call myself an experienced hunter but the bigger the pack the more crap you will take, also theres nothing wrong with second hand gear, if it hasnt failed on someone else then its likely to last, also look at the construction of a pack like the way the straps are stiched in, with your gear and meat is it going to bust a strap... because if it does then your up the creek, i got an eberlestock just one pack they are solid ( and heavy about 3kg empty ) but i know it wont fail $700 and it opens out to put your meat in, in saying that i also have a ridgeline day bag $100 and its great too, if your going overnight then consider spending some coin on a good sleeping bag, compact and light but warm it will make a big difference to your pack size.... and leave your spare undies at home you can always go comando, extra socks are where its at for me cant beat warm dry feet!!

Jet boil and a hot cup of tea and warm feed is such a moral boost though. And if it's cold a cup of tea will warm you up from the inside.

Gotcha, that makes sense! Any sleeping bag recommendations? I know I'll probably go synthetic as it 's packs down smaller and is cheaper. Hahaha I agree on the spare socks, tramping trips have taught me that spare socks are a MUST thanks!

Yea that does sound mighty uplifting! Am I right in saying that if u find someone to go hunting with you, u can pack much less because a lot of the stuff u can share? like a jet boil etc..

Oh yep looks like a nice bag alright! $400 just seems like an awful amount of money for a sleeping bag... How much is the express 400 new? Can't find much info about em online.

Problem is once you start getting serious and have a few trips under your belt you start to realise quality gear is worth the cost.

Think my bag was $420 USD.

Jackets set you back a few hundy
Tent the same
Gps, plb etc etc.

Yep, Jetboil, a good jacket, quality sleeping bag is a must have and a fly or tent. I have a 60L and she's a tight fit but I hate being cold...and hungry .

Here's what a Macpac cascade 65l can hold with room left and I haven't put spare clothes in a dry bag and compressed yet. Only thing missing is tent.

I made the foolish mistake off thinking you wiser than that.....
Things to the left of the pack which are still shown in photo of pack with gear in it is what I would wear

Should also add this is more than I usually take but never hunted South island before and still dehy to go in.
Knife, plb, gps and a few other odds and ends live on my belt.

Does the dog make the pack uncomfortable or does it keep quite still in there?
