Hmm I just had those little white buds for a long time, thinking they were fine, then on a whim I walked into a hifi shop and tried on a pair of bowers and Wilkins P5, well they was music on those that I never realised existed on the little whites, snapped them up, use them on flights with an adapter, and on buses, not noise cancelling but over the ears they do muffle things out.
If I was going agin I would get Bluetooth though, not getting tangled is worth losing a little sound quality, plus I reckon after a few to many loud bangs my hearing is not top notch anyway.
I was looking into noise cancelling as well a while ago but will hold off a while, Bose do seem to be kings but there are a few other worthy contenders, like Parrot, do the research and try before you buy!

I brought some sennheiser momentum in ear earbuds and they completely changed my music experience. I also ordered some comply foam earbuds for them which means they block out more external noise. Now when I go to the range I wear these under earmuffs which both cuts our more noise and means I can listen to music.

I fly twice a week and swear by my Bose Qc35. They are pricey, but i have yet to kill the battery on them. I fly Hamilton to CHCH which is a 1 hour 55 minute flight and they will use 10% battery while bluetoothed to my ipad.

Tuckerbox I've a pair of Bose. Really good on long flights if you want to sleep. Turn them on and you can't hear much screaming kids trolleys So you can get sleep. On a side note make sure that you get an adapter to take because all plane plugs are not the same had this on my long 14 hour flight from London to Chile really annoying when only one side works
It's the new 777 planes! Just beware of it good luck with your buy

Not a direct comparison, but I run a Bose A20 in my helmet (MD500, on Ag). Can't fault it, great noise reduction, and battery life. Reckon the recommended Bose headset will definitely suit your purpose.

@JonP, does the ANR in the A20s keep up ok in the 500 with the doors off?
How long is the battery life?
Do you have them in an Evo shell?
I had planned to replace my old Alpha last year but a bunch of unplanned expenses put pay to that idea, I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.

I find it great, was always told ANR useless in a turbine especially with doors off, but have found it works well for me (Doors off 99%). Also run earplugs and can have radio turned well down. Only got one set of ears so may as well look after them. Medicals not getting any easier to pass.
Battery life is close to advertised 40 hours (I run Bluetooth phone but not music). Just using Energizers but plan on getting rechargeable Eneeloops? It is definetly way better than 9V system the boss has. Was retrofit to a SPH shell. Would love an EVO myself, but $$

Edit: @Moutere there's a guy on Bladeslapper fitting A20 to Alpha helmets, might be worth looking into.

Mine the Q25 get all the way to Europe and half way back on a battery
Got a hell of a wake up when the ANC switched off while asleep
    Even passive is pretty good
And those annoying repeatitive safety briefings in multiple languages
Just pull the plug out - ah bliss so much better
