    Plb

    Looking at purchasing a plb.
Browsing through trademe and see the majority of the ones listed are based in australia (and are a lot cheaper)

They do say they are still operational here in NZ but wanted to be sure
Any one purchased one from there before?

Great service. The KTI are great value and they will ship you an NZ coded one. Longer battery life too.

Look at there listings the other day. Sharp pricing just a shame we a getting ripped off here in nz again. Prefer when i buy one it goes direct to nz center not via aussie with a 15min time delay?

+1 more for these guys. All Oceania plbs are coordinated via canberra an nz coded one is passed on to wellington. Oz ones work here and vice versa. At present the oz system allows more options for you to upload photos of yourself, vehicle and record a proposed trip but there are plans to have the same system operate here.

I got a KTI from Skippers mate too. Very good to deal with and registered here in NZ with Maritime NZ. No problem. 10 year battery life on the KTI. Only 5 on the ACR?

I've got no knowledge/experience with PLB's so just wondering - the website is called skippersmate and mentions registering with Maritime NZ - are these PLB's more for boaties or are they all the same and work regardless of wether your in the ocean or up a mountain?

    Cheers

PLB are mainly for hunters/trampers etc, and they also do a marine based version called an E pirb.
They will all ( to the best of my knowledge) notify the rescue co-ordination centre in wellington, regardless of if you are land/sea or even air based.

One other reason major benefit of them is that many roads in nz don't have cellphone reception, I always carry one in the truck when out and about in case I come across someone that's slid off the road. Sure there might be a farm nearby.... Or it could be a few hours walk away

The main difference between a PLB and an EPIRB is the EPIRB has to be waterproof and float.
EPIRBs are generally much larger than a PLB.

From the instructions for my kti plb, seems maritime nz are the rescue coordination centre here and they pass it on to SAR

Know some epirbs get set off if they get dunked in water as well, safety feature in case your boat goes over and ou don't get the time to grab it. Think this is what is in planes as well but there's are set off by a large 'bump' plenty of aviators that could correct me
