I’m in the market for a new outerlayer raincoat .
I want a lightweight outer coat that will fold up small ( my old one packed down into its own front pocket ).
I dont want any bulk or excess weight , just a waterproof /windproof outer layer that is breathable if possible .
Any suggestions ?

The Mrs has some fancy waterproof golf stuff greg norman brand, weighs nothing and packs down to the size of a plastic bag waterproof, windproof and allows for a lot of movement. Quiet as well should be worth a look.
I got a hooded rain jacket from the Warehouse Active intent branded, weighs almost nothing and packs down small enough to fit in a pocket (not bad considering it's XXXL) it offers no thermal qualities at all but does keep the wind and light wet stuff out.
Cost around $20 perfect for emergencies
sorry but that does not sound like good advice for in an emergency. Go sit in the cold rain for 8 hours or more and report back, that's an emergencyQuote:

This is something I take in case I get caught out in an unexpected shower or similar, it's light andpacks down small enough to fit in my pocket.
I wouldn't count on it keeping me dry heading out into piss wet conditions or if I intended to be in the rain all day.
This is just a it's small enough and light enogh that I can always carry it option.
I used it the other day when I was tahr hunting whilst we were sitting glassing and it was fine as a wind barrier.
As stated not ideal for all day wet conditions
HHe also stated waterproof so your $20 shower proof suggestion is most definitely not fit for purpose.Quote:

Had a ground effect outer shell for a while and was happy wih it was designed for bike riding so pockets where all in the small of your back which was annoying with a pack on
Patagonia Torrentshell, I have one. Its awesome. Beats the pants off all the "hunting brand" garbage out there.

Marmot precip is worth a look too, very similar to the Patagonia.
Speaking as someone who lived in the era before goretex, if it's just a light shell to stow away, warehouse $20 should do fine. You pay top dollar for the breathability, not for the waterproofing which comes cheap as long as the seams are good (sticky point).
Problem with goretex and other "breathable fabrics" (the idea that sweat vapours can exit so you don't wet clothes from your sweat) is that water vapours actually travel IN as well as out! If it's really peeing down, like if you have to stand in a cow stable using a water hose for three hours, you really don't want to be blessed with nice GoreTex or other "breathable" waterproofs, as you will have NO sweat vapour exiting the jacket, what with the moisture gradient running the other way. Cheap vinyl oilskins and gumboots do just nicely then.

The labels were all unreadable, but it dawned on me that it was probably military surplus even though it was a solid grey colour not camo .
After reading through all the suggestions here I have ordered a military surplus ( new never issued ) German Gore tex coat .
You cant buy a new gore tex coat cheaper anywhere and being German military I suspect it will be well made and designed .
Ill report back when I get it , but that will be a week or two because of Christmas .

Excellent choice and a fraction of the price of the posh brands, which frequently are not as effective.
I've got a mountain equipment "Lhotse" and it's been brilliant. Defiantly not the cheapest option but it's done a lot of work and still looks as new. Even done a 24hr hiking/orienteering event in Athurs Pass and it was wet (sideways rain and sleet, not to mention the wind) for a lot of it and it kept me dry.
You cant really compare a lot h&f style brands to the of Arc'teryx, Patagonia, ME and the like but it depends on how you are using it and how often you are going to be using it. If it's only for emergencies then you can get away with something cheap but if you're going to give it a hammering and expect good performance them you will have to spend more.
