If it's no longer supported and out of date, I would be doing the maths on what it costs to change out the battery vs the price of a replacement unit that's still supported.
One reason for this is that if there is a fault in the units that crops up like the type that was withdrawn a few years ago for continued unintended activations, the only way you would find out is if you get a notification from RCCNZ or it happens to you...
I'm sitting on an old ACR plb that's expired and needs a change of battery, service through the local agent is 2/3rd the cost of a new replacement which is smaller, lighter and comes with a nifty pouch. No argument with the service costs, it costs what it costs and an hour of charge out time to change a battery needs to support a fair amount of hands in the chain... I can't get one of the correct generic brand battery types in NZ and they won't ship it internationally (or at least I can't find a way for them to do it). I'm not needing the thing at the moment - when I was working it lived in the ute's glovebox so once I'm back on the workforce I'll replace it.
