I have the cactus outdoor scabbard. It works but it does have the cons that BradP mentions. I find that its good if your doing a lot of river crossings or climbing up and down scrambly bits where you need all of your limbs and the rifle on a sling on the shoulder just gets in the way or risks falling off. But walking long distances in open country and/or with a pack that doesn't have much in it, it turns your good pack into an uncomfortable pack.
I also use it for walking small game shooting so I can carry two firearms without them getting tangled up, it works a lot better with lighter weight rifles/shotguns than with heavier ones.
One other way I find works well for hands free is to just put the waist belt of the pack through the rifle sling when the rifle is on your shoulder. That keeps it well secured.
