Anyone done the Lost Arts 1 day Knife making course?

Mrs got it for me for my birthday and quite looking forward to it.

Any designs that anyone would recommend? Thinking a camp cleave type style as a utility/do all knife like this


But not sure if they are that practical? Thoughts?

Hmmm.as long as you don't plan on sticking pigs I'd say it would be pretty good.Plenty of curve for skinning, nice handle shape.Instead of the hole what about a gut hook?

Round the spine off and go nessimuk style. Then you will have a usefull tip to work with.

You may end up doing somthing a little simpler as that is quite a lot of work to get through in a day.

Yeah, have couple of drop point skinners, boning knife, and various other carving and butchering knives.
Was kind of thinking the cleaver style would be more a do all, chop some kindling, prep food, skin and butcher if necessary.
More just a robust knife that can handle a bit of use.

I think it would make a great camp knife. Just try and keep the blade thickness down and go for a flat grind to keep its 'slicability' of veg and meat has high as possible. If you go too thick in the stock, of do a convex grind you will have a splitting wedge (ie cleaver), which will not be as pleasurable to use for camp duties.

While a nice knife and I have not done the course you talk about that might be a little ambitious for a first time knife maker to complete in one day.

If I was you I would make a cardboard version before you go on the course, that way you will not waste any time in design and can straight on to production, also if you make a cardboard version, or several, you can work out what size suits you personally...

I have the full size version, great knife. Mine is always in my pocket usually

Decided to do a new hunting knife for myself to get a bit of practice in on the new grinder and try a couple of new things.

Handle is stabilised birds eye maple with carbon fiber pins and spacers. Good old fashioned carbon steel blade. Bit of an ugly Incusion in the brids eye so the handle terminates a bit earlier than I would like but still feels good in hand

Finished this friction folder. Took a bit of farting around to get the template/timing right.
Not heavy use but should handle field dressing ok.
14c28n and teak.

Put a bit of shape in it so feels better in hand

Handle was bit thick on this one so re-profiled it. My new favourite in hand. Grunty drop point in 01 steel. Best with forced patina I think as the other one stains up pretty quick after prepping tent pegs
