Thread: So that gear is good??

After a long time fucking about in Fiordland I've worked one thing out. All the gear we can buy is crap......well no, I'll rephrase that. What they tell us about the gear is crap. I can't blame the gear, but marketing AND RETAILERS wants rooted.

Now when you start looking at boots, coats, cookers, packs, undies, pants, shirts ETC ask yourself, "what do I want it for?" If that set of boots is for looking good (don't look so shocked) or maybe sneaking out for a quiet poach on aunty Ann's, cousins, brothers, nephews places, or mowing Hilda's prized pumpkin patch buy em, and be happy cause they will probably do the job well. (Maybe if your lucky)
But don't whinge when you go into Fiordland for a seven day quicky of the hunting kind and they crap out big time. And don't think because they cost you wankers money that they will do the job, they might, or not. Good luck.

Pay attention to this one. I really hope it gets you thinking, but look at the hunting and fishing photo's (the company, wankers that they are) and tell me how often they are wearing 'their own gear'? Not much! I've given those tossers plenty of chances, nine out of ten times you walk out with gear that doesn't even come close to fitting right, never mind being any good. This is helpful how?

By the way, them big flash as Mendel's take way over a week to dry (week is quick) and are wet in five minutes just like the rest. I had one set of boots crap out in just over a day. The most expensive flash as coat lasts two hours TOPS in Fiordland then it's wet just like the rest of them. XXX putties lasted 30 minutes, YYYY pants look good..........at the pub, but you wouldn't take them............

I don't know what the idea of this post is, maybe it's for the snoseal lovers or some shit. It's just gear. Most of the time it lets you down, don't be shocked. That retailer is laughing his arse off!!

I agree with you most retailers will sell you what looks good, and most will have never tried it but have heard it's good and that is what they are selling it on.
I like to ask a few people what they have/use before jumping in and buying something.

It can be an expensive exersize buying gear for it to not last like it should.....or what you were told would last.

I know a highcountry safari park worker that has had ALL the gear from both NZ and US, and wrecked it all.
He now uses the Rural line of Stoney Creek gear and reacons nothing beats it.

Take a look at photos of hunters of yester-year taken in Fiordland with their trophies and copy what clothes they have on...should get the lot from your local Op Shop for $10...back then men were men and boys were boys.

They shot all the easy ones - mostly from the boat or just on the shore.
All the hard ones now require better gear

Then they dragged them all the way to the tops for the photo shoot, just so they could get the mountain top back ground....off course now days one would just photo-shop.

And they did it with an ol' 303

A pair of Bullers and an Oilskin - - cant go wrong.

I think the sad fact is if you hunt in the rain you get wet,If not from the rain then from your sweat under that waterproof jacket.
I certainly havent tryed all the gear out there(or even much of it) but that is my experience with "wet weather" hunting gear

The best coat I have is about 30 years old now. Has had a huge amount of use and is still as waterproof as the day I bought it for $19.95. The breathable fabric one worth $550 failed after about 4 years. Some of the newer stuff (that the stuff used 100 years ago) is a big improvement like polyprop, a lot lighter than wool, especially when wet. Just keep away from the fire with it.

For a jacket I prefer something cheap and waterproof nowdays. That way you don't worry too much about ripping it, something I'm renowned for doing.
