SPEEDY STITCHER - great wee tool!

Folks here are probably way ahead of me, and there’s no doubt other threads…but if you don’t have one / haven’t ever used / seen one, get involved! It’s a shite Sunday in Nelson today so am mending all that stuff where the dive bag pvc is giving out at the end, canvas hunting pouch zips are coming un-stitched, you know, niggly repairs that have needed some attention for ages. Yip. A proper sewing machine is probably better but I don’t have one and for small awkward jobs in heavy duty fabrics (triple layer canvas etc.) This is bloody good. Buy one in good ol’ NZ or pay three or four times less on ALI Express and get the same thing delivered to your door. Am doing this from phone so hopefully photos come through - will post a couple later if not.
If the canvas pouch pic attaches, the speedy stitch work is the thick uneven black wax thread - hard to get straight but who gives a shit right🙂 Try getting a machine in there through the canvas - this was easy as well as speedy!🙂

I’ve used one for years and love it, last use was make a loops at the ends of a broken strop so I can use it as a tow rope

Just what I need

These are great bits of gear. I got one in the mid 90's when I was in the Army and still have it. Its been used on dozens of repairs over the years, I even modified a set of webbing with belt loops, fast ex and velcro one time.

Can produce slow but incredibly strong stitches. A must for everyone that wants to repair or modify gear and equipment.

I use out of date silk surgical sutures (they would otherwise be discarded). Damn strong! This tool looks interesting.

So in your screenshot, the 'Type A' which you've clicked on is the one to get? Not the one with the dark grey/green handle and the spool out the front?

Yes PaulNZ, that is correct. That screen shot is straight from the 'my orders' part of AE when you login. Here's a close up of it on my table. It's well made and I wouldn't hesitate to get one from China. FYI the store on my order reads, "Good An Life Store" (gotta love the English :-) )Attachment 238635

I remember Dad rebuilding a saddle using one 45 years ago..saddle was rooted to begin with and lasted for years after the refurb.... Ive done a few wee jobs using one over the years,once you get the knack of it,they arent that slow.

If you are going to the trouble of buying one on line, get a few spare needles, and the different shaped ones. And a decent roll of thread.

found one in a shop just down the road from work for $42.00 not to bad if you just want to walk into a shop and buy one some places are a rip off for them..

Ive got one but also ive got an assortment of needles and threads .fishing nylon excellent -new braid bloody excellent .I recycle leather old canvas bags all sorts of webbing (seatbelts make great belts.go to local eco centre in CHCH-old back packs ,satchels etc materials -zips buckles all get stripped and added to my collection .
made numerous slings knifesheaths ,pouches custom toolbelts .maybe not as flash as bought ones but hey theyre fit for purpose and best of all cost SFA.my son works for a certain franchise -hes ace on shoes repairs and has access to heavy duty sewing machine and thread if warranted.
shes a great wee sideline if its a wet day and you retreat to the mancave .trry it youd be suprised exactly what you can make!

Got mine from Mitre 10.....lots of repairs done

I've had a speedi stitcher (an original from the ol US of A) since I was in my late teens. But it got flogged out of the side pocket of my backpack in the Calcutta Airport in the early 80's. If you want to blow $120 NZD I think you would be able to get an American made one, but they are so simple a design that I don't think there is much the Chinese can do to it, to make it fail 2 days after you buy it:omg:

Still got mine from 1970, bought from leather supply shop in Hamilton when I was a student making hand carved and colour dyed leather bags and goods to pay my way thru Uni.

Shared this post with my beloved and she was sure that she’d seen one around here somewhere. Plumbed the depths of her sewing kit and bugger me dead, there it was. An original, probably inherited from her Mum at some stage. Could have put it to use a number of times in the past but at least now it’s been rescued and stored in an appropriate place, my workshop.

Currently Mitre 10 advertise them for $79.00. Other NZ Canvas places and Sailing outlets have them from $85.00 upwards.

Lapco have them. Also spare needles and thread.

Got mine from saddlers in Hamilton for $50 many years ago.great tools once you get the knack of them.

Fosters chandlery have them at less than $50 too.

Unless of course, the shop is selling you the very same "cheap shit from China" for 10-20x more.

Been caught out with that on more than one occasion.
