UHF radio compatibility help, Midland GXT1000 and Uniden UH064sx

A mate has just purchased some Midland GXT1000 uhf radios, and we have just tried to see if they will 'talk' to my Uniden UH064sx's without success.

Both UHF, but im picking the frequencies dont quite match up on the different channels.

Im sure some of you have been here before, can we get them to work together or not?

Were both sets of radios bought in NZ or AUS? Both have 80 channels?

No, uniden in NZ with 80ch. Midland imported via Amazon, and he reckons they have 22 channels.

Make sure you are not talking on a duplex channel, try 9 or 10 and make sure any encryption is switch off and ccts is also disabled

They will probably be on completely different frequencies then. Can't see the midlands working with any NZ UHF sets..

yup they arent even close in frequency, 467Mhz here is part of the "pay to use" spectrum here in NZ, UHF PRS is 476 477 from memory and limited to 5w max

As Mike has stated, these radios are definitely incompatible.

Your Uniden UHF radios are operating between 476.4250 and 477.4125 MHz while the Midland radios are operating between 462.5625 and 467.7125 MHz. As you can see, there is no overlap in frequencies.

Unfortunately this means the best way to communicate using these two radios is to tie a piece of sting between them and keep it tight. Alternatively, if you're not in eye contact your mate could use them to quietly get your attention by throwing them at you.

As the Midland radios don't operate within the permitted 80-channel CB bandwidth I believe it is very likely they will need to be licensed for use in NZ. I highly recommend your friend does some research on this because the cost of getting caught using them makes the price of a licence look cheap. Gadgetman might be able to give you some advice on this, as can some of the other forum members.

Licences are usually allocated to users after paying the RSM fees and annual fee in then you have the radios set up to use them (rather than the other way round)
This gives you (or your group, company etc) exclusive use of that frequency but some times only in that area. We have one for my employer which states "in Nelson / Tasman / Marlborough area at Max Output Power of 5 watts

Its also the reason why there was so many issues with the Illegal Tracking Collars as other user were paying to for the same frequencies the collars operated on.
What the hunters did not understand was for the licenced users to change frequencies would have meant huge costs in having repeaters reprogramed or replaced and the same for all vehicle / handheld radios which at on average $800 for HH and $1500 for a Vehicle soon adds up if you have a large fleet. Given they were already the licenced users of the frequencies and the hunters were not..............................................
    Sorry for the thread drift.

Also repairers are not allowed/supposed to return any equipment which operates on illegal frequencies so rather than get into an argument with customers we refuse to take them in full stop (which often causes more dramas)

Sounds like you're in a position to know Mikee, are these models able to be reprogrammed maybe?

Thanks lads, your replies are as i suspected. Its a bloody shame as his midland radios are very very clear, and are very good value for a 5W UHF.

I suspect not after having a quick look in the operators manual. They look to be specifically designed for a very narrow band of frequency operation unfortunately
