Thread: Ultralight cookset

Been meaning to post up about my ultralight cookset for a while in case anyone is looking for something similar.

It started out as a budget setup, but has proven to be really good over the last few years and I won't be getting rid of it any time soon. Can't say I had the idea first, or even found all the components, but have refined it a little.

It's based on a 750ml titanium pot with fold out handles. The brand is Toaks, but there are a few others with identical specifications.





The utility of the pot is that it is just the right diameter to hold a 110g gas canister. To this I have added a BRS titanium burner, a folding spork and most recently, a Sea to Summit X-Cup which holds 250ml liquid. The cup also fits in the 750ml titanium pot when collapsed. I also carry a small lighter in the kit for convenience, but don't panic, as I have other fire-starting equipment elsewhere in my pack. There is also room for a few sachets of miso soup or coffee in the pot.

I just use the pot to boil water which gets poured on to a dehydrated meal. I haven't had great experiences cooking directly in titanium pots, so wouldn't recommend it.



Total weight is 377g.



Everything apart from the X-Cup and obviously the gas canister were order from AliExpress. At the time, prices were dirt cheap. I see prices have gone up quite a lot over the last few years, but worth shopping around for a good deal if you're after something like this setup.

Have a very similar set up but upgraded to a Soto Windmaster from the the 25gm BRS cooker. Found it better in windy spots.

I run exactly the same except don’t bother with a cup, perfect for a few days and if camping in the bush wind doesn’t cause to many issues.

I use msr pocket rocket.less affected by the wind and a 650ml toaks cup.fits canister and cooker in cup.

You get a hotspot where the pot sits on the flame and not much else as it's a relatively poor conductor of heat. If you're not attentive, you get food burnt on the hotspot and the rest of the food goes basically unheated.

I have a 800ml stainless pot that all fits inside. Made the handle detachable, windmaster + gas and handle all fits. Not as light as your Titanium but cooks well.
I cut the base off a aluminium fry pan to use under a light stainless frypan as a heat sink. Ali frypan was 50cents at the transfer station
Would a disk of Ali under your Titanium pot work to prevent the hot spot ?

Titanium is both super thin and an awesome conducter so gets hotpots super fast. Its usually a textured surface as well so food sticks hardout

I used to use the same setup then read some bad stories of the BRS3000 stoves getting to hot and bending one of the arms, tipping boiling water everywhere. Mine never did that but i didn't want it to happen
I ended up changing to a jetboil stash cooking system weighs 200grams and is a lot more efficient than just running a burner.
I also use a titanium 400ml cup that's about 50grams
Works a treat!!

Somewhere I have a metal ring that is like a circular corrugate, I used to use it when I ran an original MSR Whisperlite International made cooking on one a dream since they are either full bore or off.

I replaced my cheap AliExpress stuff. I’ve gone the the MSR Pocket Rocket delux set. Wrights 371g all up. Good quality lightweight kit.

super thin SS mug 750 mls from warehouse....old hexi cooker frame,small bic lighter and a redbull penny cooker just tall enough to fit inside folded up hexiframe.... 20-30mls of meths and water is at rolling boil.it works and if gets lost or left behind its no huge loss $$$$ wise.

I have much the same setup but only a 500 ml pot which is all the water required for the dehydrated food I use and it also doubles as a cup . I also have an segmented aluminium wind sheild and the plastic leg base for the gas cylinder for extra stability as I generally carry the smaller gas canisters .

MSR Windburner 1L version.

I've tinkered round with cook sets for years now, wish I started with this. Thrashed the shit out of it

432grams. Hardly any difference in weights

Stores a small canister in itself too. Extraordinary performance in windy conditions. Highly recommend

MB just out of interest where did you get that netting bag.. I have the same setup more or less and the bag would be a nice addition to control the bits....
